Legacy Fighting Championship 20 Results, Recap and Photos

Legacy heads south for the very first time; RGV fighters Carlos Diego Ferreira, Chris Pechero, and others make statement on AXS TV-televised card

Legacy Fighting Championship 20 came and went this past Friday, May 31st at Corpus Christi’s American Bank Center Arena.

With this being the organization’s first trip to South Texas, they focused on getting a ton of local talent from the area to fill the preliminary card while some of the best from the RGV also got a chance to shine on AXS TV along with several UFC veterans and emerging stars as well.

Speaking of emerging stars, Brazilian native and RGV resident Carlos Diego Ferreira certainly made his Legacy debut in style by defeating recent UFC vet (and former Texas resident) Carlo Prater in the main event of the evening.

CDF had less trouble than most would have thought in this one, using his dominant grappling skills and continuous submission attempts to control much of the fight while also delivering showing his ability to handle himself on the feet as well. By the end it was a convincing 30-27 score on all three judges’ scorecards as Ferreira moved to an undefeated 7-0 record since turning pro back in April 2011.  Even more impressive after his main event win was his follow-through on his promise of competing in the 2013 IBJJF World Championships in Long Beach, CA a mere half-day later, taking red-eye to California and making it to the second round of the stacked black belt middleweight division.

Back to MMA, Damacio Page was another notable fighter making a statement on this card Fighting for the first time outside of the Zuffa (UFC/WEC) banner since early 2008, the 30 year old “Angel of Death” proved he still has it in him to deliver spectacular performances with his first round destruction of previously undefeated Texas Patrick Ybarra. Page now moves to 16-8 snapping his four-fight losing streak that culminated with him getting cut from the UFC.

Elsewhere on the main card hometown favorite Chris Pecero was able to thwart the comeback attempt of previously injured Bellator vet Adam Schindler via TKO after the Austin-based fighter was rendered unable to continue due to strikes to his previously injured knee delivered while clinched against the cage.

The main card continued with newcomer Alp Ozkilic stepping into the Legacy cage for the first time and sending Antonio Banuelos on his way out with yet another loss to finish up his Legacy contract winless in the organization after a first round knockout.

The televised card was rounded off with former MTV “Caged” cast member Matt Schell losing to South Texas’ own Elias “Smash” Garcia in the latter’s Legacy debut by majority decision in a spirited bout some would go on to call strange if only by virtue of the judges’ somewhat dubious scorecards.
