Fight-by-Fight Recap and Highlights

Daniel Owens vs Chad Box

This was a back-and-forth scrap to start the night. Owens would drive and score a takedown early in the first but Box turned the tables and delivered some solid punches from within his opponent’s guard. It was more of the same in the second as Daniel looked to secure position on the ground. He had his opponent’s back at one point but only briefly as Chad was able to reverse and land a big takedown of his own. It was Box looking for the takedowns and getting it in the third in what was otherwise a very close fight.

Max Trevino vs. Pablo Ramos

The second fight of the evening started off wildly with the Laredo native Trevino coming out like a tornado and immediately going for the spinning backfist. That would miss badly and Ramos used his lack of balance to capitalize and take him to the ground. Max would get back to his feet but Pablo used his range to win the exchanges there early on. Ramos would eventually get his opponent back on the ground and work strikes from the top to end the first round. It was more of the same in the second as Pablo worked to get his opponent to the ground. He would eventually take his opponent’s back and flatten him out. A few punches from there and referee Robert Alexander would call a stop the bout for the TKO victory going the way of Pablo Ramos.

Steven Trevino vs. Brent Edelman

If there was an award for nickname of the night, Brent “Prince Grandmaster B” Edelman would be our unanimous choice for the winner. It was a little bit closer in his fight with Steven Trevino as both fought gamely with both guys having their moments and going toe-to-toe with some outstanding exchanges at the end of rounds two and three. This really was a tough close fight but in the end, the judges called the split decision for the Marra Senki product Edelman by virtue of  him having a slight edge in controlling position in the three round fight.

Chris Jackson vs. Kevin Troyer

This bout between Chris Jackson and Kevin Troyer was one of the more entertaining standup battles of the night with neither man refusing to do anything but come forward for the majority of the bout. Both fighters had their moments on the feet. Jackson had his on the ground as well, delivering some effective ground and pound when he found his opponent on his back or took him there. That was the difference as Jackson was able to win out on the unanimous decision in this one.

Aaron Gomez vs. Alfredo Vargas

This was another fast-paced scrap with Aaron “Anarchy” Gomez and Alfredo Vargas fighting a good pace on their feet in round one. The two traded a few exchanges before Gomez was able to take his opponent to the ground and try to work a few chokes but Vargas was able to maintain his composure and finish the round with some ground and pound from within his opponent’s open guard. It was more of the same in the second with Alfredo grabbing a leg and looking for the takedown. Gomez was able to use the transition on the way down to secure a slick inverted triangle for the win and TXMMA submission of the night honors.

Tommy Guerrero vs. Eric Hallier

It what was arguably the most exciting singular moment of the night, Tommy “Gun” Guerrero was able to come from behind to secure a spectacular victory in this one. Facing a two-time state champion wrestler in Eric Hallier, Guerrero would fall behind early in the bout by getting taken down almost immediately and getting his back taken. He’d spend the bulk of the first round with Eric figure-four’d on his back standing and looking for the choke. Maintaining his composure, Tommy would get to the end of the round. In only took nine seconds of round 2 for his to deliver his own offense with a jab, jab, cross that knocked Hallier out cold before he would even get the chance to take Tommy to the ground again. Spectacular win for Guerrero and good enough for knockout of the night. This one will definitely be a contender for amateur knockout of the year at our year-end awards.

Luis De Los Santos vs. Tyler Keen

This three-round affair between Keen and De Los Santos earned our TXMMA Fight of the Night honors with both fighters showing skill on their feet and on the ground. Luis was able to score some takedowns throughout the bout but Tyler would defend with some very effective guard-work to neutralize any advantages there. For his part, Keen landed a beautiful jump switch kick that floored his opponent in round two of this bout amidst a barrage of other exchanges. Neither guy quit for the duration with Luis going for a kneebar just as the final bell sounded. The decision would go to Keen but definitely a great performance by both men in this one.

Jessica Prado vs. Katherine Roy

This was a hotly-contested bout albeit a short one as it came to a controversial TKO ending at the literally the last second (2:59) of the first round in favor of New Braunsfels fighter “Killer” Kat Roy. Both women would have their moments in the fight before Roy was able to knock her opponent down with a well-placed strike late in the round. She would capitalize and sway referee Robert Alexander to put a stop to the bout but it did appear that Prado was looking to score a takedown or at the very least get underneath where wouldn’t take any more damage in this one. The stoppage was definitely not a favorite moment for the crowd on this night.

Philip Gonzales vs. Josh Lazarte

In the last bout of the night, Philip Gonzales was able to earn a hard-fought decision of Josh Lazarte. Not too much to say about this one other than it was a closely fought bout for both guys that many may have felt could have gone either way. In the end, Philip was able to score the win and dedicate the bout to his father who he lost just recently. Definitely a very emotional moment to end a great night of fights in San Antonio.
