SAN ANTONIO, TX – The IBJJF San Antonio Open came and went last weekend with the federation’s third Texas stop of the year happening at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX. A two-day affair, the BJJ tournament featured gi and nogi competition at all levels. Competitors came in from all around the country to compete in this one, with notables including 7-time world champion Rafael Mendes (AOJ), Mansher Khera (Marcelo Garcia), Lucas Barbosa (Atos San Diego), and Bruno Frazatto (Atos ATL) along with many others.
Aside from those nationally-recognized names, a bunch of homegrown Texans made some noise at this IBJJF tournament as well. Some of the fastest-rising competitors who performed well at the San Antonio IO included Eric Hunter Newton (Gracie Barra), Michael Esquivel (Presa Laredo), Roberto Jimenez (Alliance Team Gacho).
