Brown belt prize money divisions featured at Grand Prix Grappling; Lucas Valente & Isai Cabrera take home prize money
HOUSTON, TX – Grand Prix Grappling held their 2015 Texas State Championship at Oak Ridge High School in the Woodlands last weekend. Complete tournament results have not been released at the time of this writing but some of the teams that had a strong presence included Team Tooke, Gracie Barra, and Pablo Silva. Many other academies from around the area joined in as well with some healthy competition all day long.
The highlight of tournament featured brown belts this time around with a $400 prize money division set up for grapplers north and south of 170 lbs. Two reps from Gracie Barra Texas took home the prize money in Lucas Valente (heavy) and Isai Cabrera respectively. Valente was dominant in his bracket, submitting Evan Gideon, Cooper Cardinale and Eric Newton on his way to gold. Cabrera’s maches were closer as he defeated Jacob Allphin, Jonathan Naranjo and Kurt Pantle to win his division.
Also winning in superfight action was Ground Dwellers’ Eddie Avellar who won the instructor’s superfight over Tom McCusker of Next Generation Kingwood. Also deserving of mention was Paradigm’s Reed Shelger who came in late in the day to compete in the nogi expert absolute division. He defeated Morgan Oriahi among others on his way to gold.
