Chris Pecero and Roger Reyes lead the way for South Texas fighters; Aaron Gomez scores big win over BJJ black belt opponent
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Rock’s Xtreme Fight Night XVII took place at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi this past weekend. As discussed on the TXMMA Podcast prior to the show, this Sept. 5th fight card was definitely one to watch with top prospects from South Texas and elsewhere all slated to compete.
While it indeed did live up to the billing (which we’ll get to in a sec), the event was not without an unfortunate occurrence. This time being the cancellation of the bout between Patrick Ybarra and Wanderley Carvalho Leite. A former top contender for Legacy FC and a popular hometown fighter in Corpus, Ybarra was perhaps the main one to watch on this card following over a year of inactivity. Unfortunately for him he was unable to make weight and he’ll have to show his gains another time.
With that bout out of the way, Rock’s Xtreme Fight Night XVII would then be headlined by another hometown fighter in Corpus Christi native Paulina Granados taking on Julia Jones out of Washington State. Formerly out of American Revolution, Granados had moved to San Diego awhile back to train under the Alliance MMA banner alongside UFC fighters including Jessica Penne. Also coming off a long layoff, Paulina had hoped to even her pro MMA record with a win on this card but it was not to be as Jones stepped away with the decision victory after an entertaining back-and-forth slugfest. For Jones, she now moves to 2-0 as a pro following her split decision win over Alyssa Garcia at Rocks XFN XI this past January.
Elsewhere on the card, vet and former TXMMA Ironman Award winner Christopher Pecero moved to 13-7 following a first round submission over Houston’s Edgar Juarez. Formerly undefeated amateur Roger Reyes won his pro debut impressively with perhaps some of the hardest shots of the night to get the first round KO over Luis Carter.
Other highlights included Kirk Hubble edging out Travonne Hobbs to get the split decision in their bout while Aaron Gomez outmanned BJJ black belt Washington Luis to get the win in his hometown.
David Armas and David Waters complete the winners circle for Rock’s XFN XVII.
