“Machine Gun” Kelly retains belt; CJ Hancock and Tony Nguyen new title holders after SCC 10
GALVESTON, TX – The Superior Combative Championships put on their tenth event this past Saturday, July 18th at the Galveston Island Convention Center. SCC 10 included three title fights with a total 10 fights on the night. With new matchmaker Chris “Buffalo” Rose assisting Tanya Jackson and promoter Stephen Lawhorn on the card, what resulted from these bouts might have easily been their best effort yet.
In the main event of the evening, David “Machine Gun” Kelly faced his stiffest challenge on paper since taking on Galvestonian Ralph Garcia back in May 2014. This time around it was “Lionheart” Luke Crawford coming for the belt but he would be rebuffed by Kelly en route to the five round decision. The bout had the makings for a back-and-forth technical standup battle early on but it was David coming in as the slightly quicker, more accurate fighter. A takedown counter from David at the end of the second round didn’t help Luke any as he suffered a shoulder injury that likely affected him for the rest of the bout. Props to the challenger as he didn’t back down an inch for the totality of the bout, with his face showing worse for wear. He made it to the bell though in what is sure to be a motivator towards the rest of his career. Meanwhile for the lightweight champ, David Kelly is fast approaching legit pro prospect status and it remains to be seen how long he’ll stay at the amateur level.
Next up in middleweight action, Clovis (CJ) Hancock won his own belt with a second round kimura victory over Edward Gonzalez. Not much to say about this bout other than CJ’s clear grappling advantage secured him the victory as he hunted for the sub from the opening bell until he got it.
Finally in bantamweight action, 4OZ fighter Tony Nguyen (Team Pine) became the latest champion for the weight class with a narrow split decision victory over Robert Walker. Nguyen took the bout on 16 days’ notice, flying back from California to have his go at the title. He got it after five rounds in a war of attrition between his striking and Robert’s grappling that saw him edge it out. Following the bout, Robert’s brother and training partner Jonathan Walker was none too pleased and stepped into the cage to challenge the new belt holder. With bad blood there, that should be one to watch come October and SCC’s next event.
