Female BJJ practitioners in focus at the latest event put on by the Women’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation
JUSTIN, TX – The Women’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (WBJJF) held their most recent event at Northwest High School in Justin, TX this past weekend. Founded last year, the WBJJF’s main goal is to provide a venue exclusively for female athletes to meet and compete. And while competition is always in focus, the WBJJF events are also focused on charity, with NPO’s such as RescueHer.org, RestoreHer, and Hope for the Silent Voices all hosting a presence at this latest tournament.
The 2nd edition of the WBJJF South Regional Championship featured girls and women from the ages of 3 and up competing in both gi and nogi divisions. Competitors came mostly from the DFW area but some drove up from Houston and other cities around Texas we well. Overall it was a smaller tournament but one with a refreshing feel considering the focus exclusively on women’s BJJ. Some of the best matches of the day included Katharine Harrison who performed really well in both the gi and nogi divisions. Also impressing were Christy Ludwick out of NDBJJ and Kristine Felts, who stepped out of her role as tourney organizer to compete in the gi division.
The kids were adorable as well with the youngest ones stepping out on the mats to have a little bit of fun and get a taste of what competing is all about while the older ones, like Jessie Crane of Alvarez BJJ, were a bit more serious when it came to competing to win. In fact she did well and won in both her youth AND adult divisions, securing gold in every division she competed in.
Even MMA fighters like Invicta FC’s Jinh Yu Frey stepped out on short notice to compete in support of the female grappling community.
Overall, good times to be had at the WBJJF tournament. Be on the lookout for their next event this coming October. Until then, check out the photo highlights below and make sure to check out the complete tournament photo album available for print and download order via Mike Calimbas Photography.
