Three title fight highlight Best of the Best 4; Houston’s Rey Trujillo wins along with DJ Fuentes and Hayward Charles

BROWNSVILLE, TX – The year of professional MMA started off strong in South Texas this past weekend as JC Promotions (Hero FC) presented Best of the Best IV. Taking place at the Jacob Brown Auditorium in Brownsville, Best of the Best IV showcased 3 title fights with some of Texas’ best showcased in the featured bouts of the evening.

In the main event, he veteran out of Edinburg DJ Fuentes defended his Hero FC bantamweight title with a  unanimous decision victory over San Antonio’s Ray “The Judge” Rodriguez. The two measured each other throughout the first two rounds but the 20-fight veteran was able to take things late to win out in a competitive battle.

Next up, a pair of Texas veterans competed for the Hero FC middleweight belt with the hard-hitting Hayward Charles out of Fort Worth taking on Abilene’s Brandon Farran. No doubt the knockout was on Farran’s mind headed into this one but he never got the chance with Hayward landing a big right hand en route to setting up the submission finish via arm triangle choke. This loss was Farran’s first since 2013 following two big wins (Bronzoulis, Spann) last year. Meanwhile Charles can count this as his third win in a row and 11th overall, all of them impressively via submission.

Last but certainly not least in title action was incumbent Hero FC featherweight champion Jamall Emmers defending against Houston’s resident ironman, Rey Trujillo. After 3 wins and 2014 and with an overall record of 7-1 headed into this fight Jamall was certainly a prospect to watch headed into this one. Unfortunately for him Rey Trujillo was willing to play spoiler. Rey started off strong as always as he looked to overwhelm his opponent. The aggression paid off as Emmers was forced to fight on his heels and fell victim to a second round triangle choke.

Elsewhere on the card San Antonio’s Alex Hernandez was able to move to an impressive 5-1 by virtue of a decision win over DFW’s Jacob Capelli. Hernandez is now in line to face undefeated Ray Banda (4-0) for the Hero FC lightweight belt. Travis Cox was able to win by TKO over Clark Adams to move to 2-1 while Gilbert Urbina moved to 3-0 with a decision win over Roldan Abundis. Guillermo Gonzalez, Cesar Del Angel, Daniel Duran completed the winner’s circle at Best of the Best 4 with a trio of TKO victories.
