Houston MMA: Fury Fighting Championship 2 Event Preview

 

HUMBLE, TX – Professional fighting returns to the Houston area on October 24th with Fury Fight Championship 2. Taking place at the Humble Civic Center on October 24th, this event will feature many of Houston’s veteran MMA fighters along with some talent from out of town. At the time of this writing there are 17 bouts scheduled for the card. While there’s a good probably some of these might drop off, fans should nonetheless look forward to a full night of MMA action at Fury FC 2.

Here’s some of the fighters/fights worth keeping an eye on leading up to Fury FC 2:

 

Rey Trujillo vs. Javier Obregon in Fury FC 2 main event

 

A pair of veterans from rival cities meet up in the Fury FC 2 main event when Houston’s Rey Trujillo (16-11) meets up with DFW’s Javier Obregon (7-9). With over 40 fights between them. both Rey and Javi have been around the block and have experienced success in their careers. Obregon has won a title (STFC) while Trujillo has done the same for IXFA. And aside from their accolades, both of these guys have that aggressive attitude that makes them very fan-friendly fighters. The key in this matchup lies in their styles. Trujillo is a knockout-minded fighter while Obregon is more of a submission specialist. Whoever is able to impose their will on the other will win this fight.

 

Ryan Hollis and Humberto Deleon finally square off

 

Next up in a long-awaited matchup, Ryan Hollis (7-4) and Humberto Deleon (6-5) will finally step into the cage in the co-main event. These two have been matched for quite a few months now, with at least one cancelled event stalling this bout between 2 of the most highly regarded fighters in Texas in the flyweight division. Humberto already has some lengthy experience fighting in both Bellator and Strikeforce. Meanwhile, Hollis has been in some high profile bouts himself and has quietly won three in a row. Both don’t mind striking and are both snipers with subs as well. This one has the potential to be a fight of the night candidate.

 

Streaking Alex Black faces resilient opponent in David Armas

 

Speaking of fight of the night candidates, this matchup between Alex Black (7-4) and David Armas (5-10) should be quite the entertaining scrap. Houston MMA fans should be well aware of the styles of both guys by now after a few years on the scene.  Alex and David always come to fight and if this one stays on the feet, anything could happen. And as for Alex, he’s hit his stride in the past few years – impressively winning his past 6 fights in a row. It’s not far-fetched that another high profile win or two could put him in the big leagues. Look for him to try to score another W here while David looks to play the role of knockout-minded spoiler.

 

Guilherme Moriera returns to the cage opposite Aaron Reeves

 

Fury FC 2 also brings the return and pro debut of former Garcia Promotions amateur champion Guilherme Moreira. A member of Team Tooke, Gui did work at the amateur level, winning his first 6 bouts before his lone loss. He hasn’t fought since that time, over 2.5 years ago. Now he’ll not only return but do so against an undefeated opponent in Metro Fight Club’s Aaron Reeves (2-0). Long story short, whatever gains Moreira has made in the past 2 years, he’ll have to show in this one. And whoever walks out the winner will be looked at as a legit prospect in the welterweight division.

 

What other fighter steals the show at Fury FC 2?

 

Aside from the matchups featured above Fury FC 2 also features a wide array of talent from the Houston area and beyond. It goes without saying that any of these guys can easily steal the show. Here are some of the ones we’re looking forward to seeing most:

Alex Morono – Long considered one of Houston’s top prospects, Alex Morono has built up a 6-3 record as a pro already despite being only 24 years old. He ran into a roadblock however in his last fight, a TKO loss to Diego Henrique Da Silva at Legacy FC 31. He’ll be looking to bounce back here against journeyman Larry Hopkins.

Colin Wright – After winning multiple titles at the amateur level Colin has sputtered out of the gate as a pro, going 1-2 thus far. He’ll look to get back to .500 versus Carlos Jimenez who is making his pro debut.

Ricky Turcios – Another top prospect as an ammy, Ricky Turcios has gone 2-0 so far in his pro career and will seek his third straight win opposite Edward Longoria, a pro debut with 11 amateur fights on his record.

Levi West – Former Golden Gloves boxer Levi West will look for his first pro win opposite DFW’s Armando Servin, another fighter with boxing experience who’s gone 3-2 so far in pro MMA.

Jeremy Hardy – Houston’s “next up” as far as heavyweight prospects go, Jeremy “Nightmare” Hardy will be making his pro debut off the heels of a 6-1 amateur career. He’ll be taking on Gary Harling, who despite being winless, has seemed to get under his opponent’s skin.

Artenas Young – As one of the most seasoned fighters on the card along with Rey Trujillo, “Machine Gun” has to be mentioned. And as they say, styles make fights and he’ll be facing a willing opponent in Sam Mohammed.
