Bushi Ban’s Gerzan Chau looks to rebound into the win column after facing tough challenges
FRIENDSWOOD, TX – Local favorite Gerzan Chau will be looking to get his record back into the win column this coming Saturday. He’ll be returning to MMA action at the Battle of the Mainland event put together by Savarese Promotions. Set in Texas City, this event will feature more boxing than anything but has 3 MMA bouts on tap as well.
For Chau this will be an opportunity to get back to .500. He’s lost his last 2 bouts by decision to tough opponents. In fact he’s only lost to tough guys throughout his career but at this point getting a win would go a long way for his future prospects in MMA. In his way stands Travonne Hobbs, an Austin-based fighter who’s in the same spot. Travonne has taken on tough guys too, including UFC fighter Carlos Diego Ferreira. Be that as it may, he’s in bad need of a win too.
This bout between Chau and Hobbs will be contested at featherweight, 10 pounds north of Gerzan’s natural weight class and 10 pounds sought of the lightweight division where Hobbs has fought in the past. With Travonne being primarily a striker, this should create a unique challenge for Gerzan as he’ll be fighting an opponent naturally bigger than him. It’s up to the Bushi Ban product to solve that puzzle and/or take the fight to the ground and exploit a perceived grappling advantage. However this plays out, it should be interesting.
Also scheduled for MMA action at Battle of the Mainland is Gracie Barra’s Omar Hillail. Omar will foray into the pro ranks having won a title at the amateur level, for Legacy Amateur Series. He posted a 4-1 record in the minors and will look to score his first pro win against Robert Hill, a 2-8 journeyman fighting out of Mississippi.
The additional MMA fight on the card features Richard Copley vs. Jesse Riley. Also set to compete on the card in boxing action is former local MMA champion Angel Huerta. Meanwhile the boxing portion of the card is headlined by Texas State champion Juan Leija.
