Legacy Amateur Series 16 Recap – Results and Photos from Houston

Northcutt siblings score big finishes in title wins; Danny Orr and Mike Trinh also win title bouts at LAS 16

HOUSTON, TX, July 14, 2014 – The city of Houston got its latest display of rising talent this past Saturday, July 12^th with Legacy Amateur Series 16 taking place at the Houston Arena Theater. The Houston MMA event featured three title fights along with a plethora of bouts showcasing some of the best young fighters in the city at the developmental level.

In the main event of the evening Legacy Amateur Women’s Champion Colbey Northcutt defended her title at 135 lbs. with a second round guillotine choke submission over Tennessee-based challenger Amy Coleman. With 6 fights under her belt Coleman was thought to present the most significant challenge yet for the Houston-based karate stylist but it turns out Colbey has been working on her overall game just as much as her striking. With that, she took the submission as it presented itself and now looks forward to going pro as early as the Legacy FC show scheduled for November in Houston if the right opportunity presents itself.

Speaking of potentially going pro in November, Colbey’s brother Sage Northcutt proved he might be ready for that as well with his first round submission over a seasoned opponent in previously undefeated Trent Parker. A wrestler for years at the scholastic level, Trent hopes to use that base to take Northcutt to the ground but Sage countered well and got to his opponent’s back early on in this bout. The Katy-based prospect wasted no time from there in securing the fight ending submission by rear-naked choke to pick up his second amateur title in the 170 lbs. weight class. With a pro debut looming it looks like the 18 year old will depart the ammy level as the organization’s reigning lightweight and welterweight champion.

LAS 16 also featured a middleweight title fight not involving a Northcutt with Danny Orr fighting in the organization for the first time opposite Clovis “CJ” Hancock for the org’s middleweight belt.  A native of Lake Jackson, Orr has made a name for himself on the local circuit as of late, winning both the SCC and CDM prior to his Legacy debut. He continued that streak by winning this past Saturday but not without a challenge as Hancock gave him all he could handle on the ground en route to the split decision. Not sure on his next move just yet but despite his 38 years of age, it definitely does not look like Mr. Orr has any plans of slowing down.

Last but not least in title action, Saul Soliz trained Mike Trinh beat Edward Longoria to get his biggest win yet at the amateur level. Afterwards the moonlighting restaurant owner could be seen shouting out “Mike’s Seafood” to the crowd in one of the highlight moments of the evening. As for the rest of the action at Legacy Amateur Series 16, it definitely had its share of top performers.

Bi Nguyen (Bebe Laced) let out all of her 4’11” fury in the form of body shots that crumbled opponent Ashley Milligan in the second round. Prior to the fight Bi had expressed a desire to get her first finish in MMA and she did just that in this now. Next up for her is both Muay Thai and MMA this September following a short week of post-fight R&R (read: plenty of food).

Other top performers at Legacy Amateur Series 16 included Cody Owens who scored a huge finish by KO over Sean Johnson less than twenty seconds into their bout along with Kyle Villeareal, Juan Dominguez, and Will Morris who also scored finishes in their fights as well.
