Premiere Combat Group promises exciting fights tonight in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, TX, June 27, 2014 – One night before the UFC hosts their first card in the “River City”, San Antonio’s native amateur MMA promotion, Premiere Combat Group (PCG), kicks the MMA-filled weekend off with Cowboys Extreme Cage Fighting. This event will be headlined by current PCG 185 lbs champion Chad “Monster” Box defending his title against “Dirty” Joe Maupin. Also, PCG will be crowning a new champion at 145 lbs, with Peter Caballero facing off against Sam Garcia.

TXMMA Preview and Predictions: Premiere Combat Group – June, 27, 2014

185 lbs.: Chad Box (3-4) vs. Joe Maupin (3-1)

There is a lot of hype going into this one. Both fighters have three wins a piece in their amateur careers and both fighters are known for their one-punch knockout ability. Chad Box hasn’t been as consistent as Joe Maupin, who after losing his debut has been on a complete tear finishing all of his fights by TKO in the first round. However, Box has more experience in the cage with this being his ninth fight and fifth title fight. Box and Maupin both respect each other’s knockout capability, agreeing that the fight will end before it goes to the judge’s scorecard.

“From what I have seen, Joe likes to come out swinging,” Box said. “I like to come out swinging too. Somebody is going to drop.”

“It won’t go all five rounds,” Maupin said. “Somebody will be getting knocked out on Friday.”

PREDICTON: Joe Maupin wins by TKO in the 2nd round. (KO of the Night)

145 lbs.: Peter Caballero (5-1) vs. Sam Garcia (3-1)

Peter Caballero is looking to get back to his winning ways after suffering the first defeat in his amateur career. He is looking to rebound against Sam Garcia, a fighter he has previously beat before. Garcia is anxious about his rematch with Caballero, but is more focused on the title belt instead of revenge. With the 145 lbs title up for grabs both fighters are ready to give it their all.

“My loss motivated me to work harder than I ever have before,” Caballero said. “My fight with Sam was last year and this is now. I’m going in there with one goal and that is to fight hard every second I am in the cage.”

“I have worked a lot on my game and improving my weaknesses,” Garcia said. “I have a lot of confidence going into this fight and I see myself at the end with my arm raised and the title around my waist.”

PREDICTION: Peter Caballero wins by Split Decision (Fight of the Night)

125 lbs.: Corey Lewellyn (2-0) vs. David Waters (4-2)

This bout features Warriors Edge’s Corey Lewellyn vs. David “Rapid” Waters. Lewellyn is fresh off a spectacular win that ended with a flying triangle. Waters is also returning on a high-note, winning his last fight by unanimous decision, his third win by unanimous decision. This will be an interesting fight. Lewellyn stands tall for a 125er at 6’0, while Waters is only 5’6. Both fighters have a Jiu-Jitsu background and both have proved they can fight all three rounds. This should go the distance.

PREDICTION: Corey Lewellyn wins by Unanimous Decision

155 lbs.: Bryan Little (3-2) vs. Jesse Almarez (0-0)

Team Lutter’s Bryan “Clubber” Little will be facing newcomer Jesse Almarez. This is an interesting matchup with this being Little’s sixth fight and Almarez’s debut. Very admirable on Almarez’s part to have his debut fight against the more experienced Little. Another interesting fact is Little is 35 years of age. Could age play a factor in this fight? The in-cage experience might be a “Little” too much for Almarez to overcome.

PREDICTION: Bryan Little wins by Unanimous Decision

135 lbs.: David Miramontes (1-0) vs. Micah Barro (1-1)

David Miramontes is a high energy fighter that likes to throw hands in the cage and Micah Barro isn’t one to shy away from an exchange. One knock on Miramontes is his gas tank. He is very active out of the gate, but if Barro can overcome the storm early on he can earn his second win.

PREDICTION: Micah Barro wins by Split Decision

135 lbs.: Dominique Gonzales (1-0) vs. Katherine Roy (1-1)

The first of two Women’s MMA fights. Dominique Gonzales recently made her debut at the last PCG event winning by unanimous decision. Spectators saw a dominant Gonzales rough up her opponent for three full rounds. Katherine Roy, a United States Army Veteran, is nothing to mess with and poses a serious threat to Gonzales. However, Roy has not fought since December 1st, 2012. Something to watch for will be cage rust. This should be a great fight for WMMA and MMA itself.

PREDICTION: Katherine Roy wins by Unanimous Decision
