Corpus Christi based fighter leans on heavy cross-training ahead of PCG fight vs. Corey Lewellyn this Friday
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX, June 26, 2014 – When it comes to preparation, David “Rapid” Waters is no stranger. The 26 year old flyweight has had six fights so far, posting a 4-2 record and gaining valuable experience along the way. Throughout it all he’s labored to learn as much as he can from as many coaches as he could come across.
“I’m a black belt in 2 forms of karate. I’m also a blue belt in BJJ and train under Justin Barker at Strong Arm / Paragon. I also work my wrestling and striking with KO Sports and my coaches there are Kirk Hubble for traditional Muay Thai and Mike George for Dutch style. I also cross train with Weapons at Hand and Full Contact Fight Academy. Both teams are definitely a great bunch of guys. Of course I like to work with Paragon CC TX (Aurelio Gallegos) when I can get that way also. I’d say everybody helps me so much in their own ways. I like to think of myself as a hard worker and a go-getter so I’m just trying to soak it all in.”
Having been married for four years and also working in the refineries, Waters definitely has other priorities in life other than MMA but he’s striving to give it his all (in MMA). Who knows where it will take him but at the same time he wants to be a positive influence to those around him and keep winning fights.
“My ultimate goal would be reach the UFC or OFC,” he says. “Of course that’s down the road so right now I just want to keep learning and get some titles under my belt before I even start thinking about going pro.”
Most of his fights have taken place in South Texas but he’ll be competing for PCG this Friday, with the promotion based in and the fights taking place in San Antonio. It will be David’s fifth fight at this weight where he’s remained undefeated.
“I’m getting better and learning more and more. I just tell myself to work hard and fight easy. Hopefully in the future I’ll get to fight all over the world God willing. My opponent (Corey Lewellyn) looks tough. He’s long and likes to strike and has a pretty good ground game so the fight will be a good challenge. I’ve been taking my diet a lot more serious and I’ve upped my entire workout routine in all aspects to get ready. I plan on grinding it out and hoping to get a finish either submission or KO, which ever presents itself first.”
“It’s just a blessing to do what I do in the cage. I’m hungry for this fight and I can’t wait to show what I can do. God bless everybody and I’ll see you all on the 27th!”
