Premiere Combat Group main event for July 27th pits two seasoned amateurs against one another for middleweight title

JOSHUA, TX, June 26, 2014 – The main event of this Friday night’s Premiere Combat Group (PCG) amateur MMA event in San Antonio should be a fan-friendly affair to say the least. It features a middleweight title fight with defending champ Chad “Monster” Box defending against another charismatic opponent in San Marcos based Joe Maupin. With no less than 12 bouts between them, these two fighters aren’t short of experience at the amateur level, and they’ll be competing not only for the title but for the mythical designation of seeing who’s the most “pro ready.”

We caught up with the defending champ to get his thoughts on the match:

TXMMA Pre-Fight Interview – Chad “Monster” Box

29380_10151276942989293_624661714_nWhere do you train?

I train at Phalanx Powerhouse.  I’ve been with them few months now and I feel like I’ve finally found the gym I need to be at to further my career.

What’s the most important thing to you outside of MMA?

I would say my role as a father. I’m a father of four. It’s everything to me that my girls grow up to be above average and respectful of themselves. I love spending time with my crazy kids.

Seeing you fight a few times now it seems you always have a lot of support in the crowd. Why is that?

I’m from a smaller town and everyone supports me. I’ve met a lot of people thru my different walks of life and seem to get new followers everywhere. I bring a crowd to every fight no matter how far. And sometimes they have been known to get too rowdy. <laughs>

Yeah we’ve seen that too, but never in a bad way. You’ve had 8 fights now. Which ones stick out most?

I broke one guy’s arm and somehow got a ‘no contest’ for it in a title fight. That was crazy. Also I had a fight I shouldn’t have took that was 2 weight classes above where I normally fight. I lost a very controversial split decision after cutting 45 pounds. Those ones stick out but what the heck, it’s in the pros that the losses count. I’m just looking to improve and learn something about me as a fighter every time they close that cage.

Speaking of turning pro, is that on your mind?

Yes that’s on my mind for sure.  This will definitely/probably be my last 185 fight. After this I’m defintely going to stay at 170. Whether I take it pro or not is up to my new team at the Powerhouse.

Let’s talk Joe Maupin. I saw you responded back to his video. Know a lot about him?

I’ve did a little research but not much. I’m just try to play my game.

What else have you done to get ready?

I just joined the best team possible.  I’ve never had better teammates then now.  Phalanx is full of true gladiators and I’m going to win by any means necessary.

Any last words Chad?

I’m just ready to fight. I feel like I ain’t really got to let the Monster out in a while so that’s what is getting ready to happen.
