Bubba Bush dominates in title defense; Up-and-coming prospects win at Legacy FC 31
HOUSTON, TX, June 16, 2014 – Legacy Fighting Championship 31 came and went this past weekend in Houston and it was a good one for the defending middleweight champion. Bubba Bush hardly suffered a scratch in his title defense versus Takoma, WA’s Alfonso Gonzales, dealing the challenger his first loss.
A late replacement for Roger Narvaez, Alfonso was expected to provide a stiff challenge for the Bryan/College Station based Bush but is what not to be. Gonzales barely got a chance to fire on his feet before Bubba got him to the ground with a trip takedown. From there it was a walk in the park for Bush as he dominated the action en route to the rear naked choke finish. This victory marks Bush’s fourth in a row with four consecutive finishes.
In the co-main event of the evening Damacio Page scored a workmanlike victory over Elias Garcia in his flyweight debut. It looked like it might be a fight early on with “Smash” (Garcia) being able to take his veteran opponent to the ground but that was pretty much all he had as Page turned the tide and dominating him with superior grappling throughout the course of the fight, stifling any offense the Corpus Christi native might have had. It all came to a head late in the third round as Damacio was able to secure the arm-triangle for the finish and his third straight win in Legacy FC.
The remainder of the Legacy 31 main card featured some other fighters looking to make their way up the ranks.
Brazilian Diego da Silva got himself an impressive victory with a first round TKO over Houstonian Alex Morono. It looks like it would be competitive early on before Da Silva dropped Alex with a straight right hand that landed clean. From the looks of things Alex suffered a flash knockout but was back and going for Da Silva’s leg as he was eating punches. Those punches were enough for referee Chris Reed to make a judgment and call a halt to the bout. Alex popped up to protest a quick stoppage but too little too late as the ruling had already been made.
Next up, Justin Reiswerg was able to deal Jared Chaffee the first loss of his career by way of a grazing knee that split his forehead open late in the first. That cut was enough to force the doctor to call a halt to the bout in between rounds. This had the makings of a classic bout prior with some slick transitions on the ground by the BJJ brown belts. Though the stoppage was fair, one can’t help but to think the crowd got a little short-changed in this one. Nonetheless, Justin gets a well-earned victory while Chaffee was gracious in defeat.
4OZ Fighter Alex Black was able to bring his win streak forward to an impressive sixth straight with his defeat of Eric Valdez by split decision in the second bout of the AXS TV card. It was a back and forth bout in this one with Alex doing more to control the action for three rounds.
Last but not least in the opening bout of the televised card, Charlie Ontiveros was indeed able to prove himself faster to the punch than Artenas Young with his unanimous decision win over the “Machine Gun.” Utilizing impressive timing and footwork, “The American bad Boy” simply confounded his opponent just enough where he was not able to be as aggressive as he should have been. With this win, Charlie now moves to 5-2 overall and he will no doubt be looking to climb back up the ladder of contention in short order.
