Not content on just making it, “Silverback” Narvaez aims for the win in UFC debut June 7th

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX, June 4, 2014 – Up to this point in his career it might be fair to say that Roger Narvaez has built his MMA career in methodical fashion. The Corpus Christi firefighter they call “Silverback” was never in a rush. He doesn’t seem like the type of fighter to push the envelope for short term gain while mortgaging his long term stability. His family always came first. So did his job and then came fighting as a distant third. And yet throughout it all Roger always had an MMA goal in mind. The end game for him (and the start of a new one) was to fight in the UFC.

This Saturday, June 7th in Albuquerque, NM that dream comes true. Roger is stepping up to the plate to take on Patrick Cummins in his UFC debut. It’s a short notice fight and in a weight class north of his natural home at middleweight. It is for sure a risk but one worth taking. For Roger, the time is finally right.

“I feel like this is a huge accomplishment,” he says. “Not only for myself but for everyone who has faith in me along the way. This is my dream coming true and I plan on making the most of it. I have always believed in setting realistic goals. Right now my goal is to win a fight in the UFC. I am going to take each fight as if I am fighting to keep my job because realistically speaking that’s exactly what it is.”

“I feel Patrick Cummins is a strong first opponent. A lot of people consider him a joke or scrub because of how he looked in his last fight (versus Daniel Cormier). I am not one of those. This dude was an Olympic wrestler and All-American walk on. He trains with beast day in and day out and he is going to be the bigger guy fight night. I think it’s going to be a tough fight but I am definitely excited about the opportunity.  We aren’t just going to show up and collect a check, we are going to get the W.”

“For all my supporters out there I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.  I have had an outpouring of support from not only the local community but also from the Texas MMA scene. Of course there will always be haters out there but I guess that is just part of the deal. God bless!”
