CORPUS CHRISTI, TX, June 23, 2012 – We recently caught up with hometown fighter Roger Narvaez aka “The Silverback” of FCFA / Paragon regarding his upcoming fight with Austin’s Andre Kavanaugh next Saturday night (June 30th) at the UWF show scheduled for the American Bank Center.
Roger will be looking for third professional win in this one as he fights in Corpus Christi for the very first time. He previously picked up 2 wins in the STFC organization after winning 3 in a row at the amateur level prior to going pro.
Here he is with some of his future goals and more on his background now.
UWF 4 Interview – Roger Narvaez (FCFA / Paragon)
First, give some of the newer fans some of your background again. How did you get into this sport, who do you train with, and why do you love it?
I first got into martial arts when i was in first grade. I was always fascinated with the arts. I studied Tae Kwon Do till i was 14 then went the traditional route with sports. It wasn’t until much later that I got into MMA. I was always a fan of the sport but never sought it out to train locally. Then I heard that an old high school acquaintance had been training and fighting professionally (Hector Munoz). I can honestly say the day I walked in and did my first BJJ class my life was instantly changed. Currently I represent Full Contact Fight Academy and Paragon BJJ. I train because I still have the alpha male competitive spirit. I have always been involved in sports and I will always compete, whether it is in MMA or BJJ.
Other than MMA, what other sports/hobbies are you into? What do you do for fun when you’re not training?
Other than MMA the only other sport I do is BJJ…Ha. The sport totally consumes my life. I realize to reach the pinnacle of this sport that is the way it has to be. As far as hobbies I would have to say just spending time with my family. Whether it’s going to the movies, barbecuing, or just going to dinner I love to spend every spare second that I am not working or training with them.
You’ve taken your time with going pro. What was the thought process like finally deciding to make the move?
Personally I believe there are too many fighters that rush their careers or do it because they think it is cool to be an “MMA fighter”. I have taken my time to polish my skill set and work on my weaknesses. I do this to make a better living for my family and when it comes to them I am always going to do what is best. After my 4 amateur fight I consulted with my Hector and he thought that it be best to turn pro. After looking at the guys in the amateur circuit at the time I felt it was time to move on.
How does it feel to be debuting in Corpus for UWF? Also, have you always been from the area?
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years…who knows? Only GOD knows what the future will hold. All I know is I fight for my family and will continue to do so with a great conviction.
Regarding your fight, what do you know about your opponent?
As far as my opponent goes his name is Andre Kavanaugh and I believe his record is 2-4. His record is a bit deceiving because most of those losses are to other tough fighters. I know he is not the most technical fighter but he has a lot of heart. My job on June 30th will be to test that heart.
What do you hope to show your hometown fans in this fight about yourself?
Every time I fight I try to do my best and give everyone an exciting fight. I can guarantee that whether this fight ends in the 1st round or the 3rd I plan on representing my city to the fullest. I have a very primal instinct when it comes to fighting, I don’t just win, and I usually win in a very violent fashion.
I am not one for predictions because I know anything can happen. What I can guarantee is that I will be ready for a War. I have trained harder than ever before. I am fighting for more than just myself these days and my opponent will have to break my will to beat me. I can guarantee that that will not happen.
What’s next for you?
I do have another opportunity to fight at Xtreme Combat Fighting inaugural event in August…but for now Andre is the only thing on my mind.
Any last words before the fight on June 30th?
I would like to thank my family, friends, and training partners that continue to support me. I also want to give a shout out to my brothers that I work with at the CCFD. Thanks to all my sponsors that support me….I am just trying to live the dream.
