Obregon defends featherweight title in South Texas; Salvidar submits Sonny Luque

MCALLEN, TX, March 3, 2014 – Professional MMA returned to South Texas this past Saturday with the South Texas Fighting Championship once again bringing their brand of MMA action to the Mcallen Convention Center for their twenty-eighth event.

Dubbed STFC 28: Unleashed, this show would be headlined by a championship main event with STFC featherweight champion Javier Obregon out of Dallas-Fort Worth putting his title on the line against Houston’s David Armas. As is customary between these two it ended up being quite a spirited affair with both fighters having their moments. Obregon broke his hand in the first round so that made things even more challenging for him but he got the win by virtue of third round submission by armbar. With this win Obregon not only defends his title but also snaps a three-fight losing streak so look for him to continue his momentum throughout the year.

The co-main event of the evening didn’t last nearly as long with Santa Rosa resident Fabian Salvidar defeating Sonny Luque of Laredo by first round D’arce choke. The 29 year old Saldivar now moves to an impressive 4-1 as a pro with wins over Luque and Kirk Hubble in his last two bouts. Come to think of it, his only loss was by narrow split decision to BJJ black belt Tony Tipton in his pro debut back in 2012. With this latest win hell definitely be looked at as a rising prospect from now on. As for Luque, he now moves to 4-4 and will no doubt be looking to rise back up next time.

There was action elsewhere at STFC 28 as well.

Amador Ramirez was able to submit Miguel Vega by guillotine choke in the third round of their bantamweight bout while welterweight Orlando Rodriguez bested Julio Villarreal by decision in their fight.

Debuting fighter Adrian Torres beat fellow first-timer Luis Davila by RNC in the first round of their bout while Luke Flores also wasted no time in his, also beating George Powery by first round choke.

Last but not least in the opening bout of the night Ricardo Rojas and Mike Ortiz went to a decision with Rojas winning on all three judges’ scorecards.
