MMA fighters try their hand at Muay Thai and boxing in South Texas event

1604908_10152205297274293_1445735681_nROBSTOWN, TX, February 11, 2014 – Combat sports took a trip down to South Texas this past weekend with Rock Balboa presenting Rock’s Extreme Fight Night 6 to fight fans at the Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairgrounds in Saturday, February 8, 2014. The event featured a hybrid fight card featuring both boxing (5) and Muay thai (3) style kickboxing fights for a total of eight fights overall. Notable also for this card were the presence of noted Corpus Christi based MMA fighters like Paulina Granados, Audrey Alvarez, and Chris Pecero all trying their hand in these striking only contest.

To open the evening, Paulina Granados, aka “Firefox” to her legion of fans, stepped into the ring for her pro boxing debut opposite Paola Oriz of Houston. The two came out firing in this fight but in the end, the split decision win went to American Revolution’s Granados with judges’ scores of 39-37, 39-37, 40-36 to wrap up four rounds of action.

Next up was another women’s bout, this time featuring FCFA/Paragon competitor Audrey Alvarez taking on Nick Gonzalez coached Lindsey Marino in what was largely a battle of aggression for crisp technique. In the end the latter won as Marino walked away with the split decision victory.

1924820_10152205296709293_1884962516_nNext up was a battle for the ages (literally) with young Ernest Reyna going up against Luis Mora. There was an incredible age difference here with Mora over 50 years old going up against Reyna who’s just 21. Sadly it took all of 47 seconds for this one to end with the younger fighter showing up while the elder statesman went down.

Another boxing match then followed with Julian Gilden beating Jeremy Mutchler by TKO in the first round before another MMA fighter stepped into the cage in Chris Pecero. He would face another MMA vet in Dimitre Ivy. “Enigma” (Pecero) started strong here but was hit with a solid knee that cut him, forcing the ref stoppage in round two. This bout was followed by Greg Gutierrez taking out Wesby James by dominating unanimous decision.

Two final fights rounded off the action at Rock’s Extreme Fight Night 6 with Dustin Adams beating Armando Herrera by ref stoppage only 38 seconds into their Muay Thai rules fight and Robert Vela beating Daniel Arriaga in the final boxing match of the evening.
