Trio of title fights to be featured at Superior Combative Championships VI, February 15th in Galveston
GALVESTON, TX, February 9, 2014 – Mixed martial arts returns to Galveston on Saturday, February 15th with Superior Combative Championships putting on their sixth event overall for fans on the island. Set to take place at the Galveston Island Convention Center directly in front of the boardwalk, Superior Combative Championships 6 (SCC VI) may be the promotion’s most ambitious card yet with three titles on the line on top of a planned 14-fight slate overall.
Heavyweight title fight on tap: Jeremy Hardy vs. Jason Preston
A heavyweight title bout headlines Superior Combative Championships 6 with the main event pitting incumbent champion Jeremy “Nightmare” Hardy against a formidable challenger in Jason “Predator” Preston.
A former high school and college basketball player, Jeremy Hardy is generally considered to be one of, if not the top amateur heavyweight prospect in the state of Texas. He’s 3-1 as an amateur with 3 finishes so far with his only being to (now) 4-0 pro Eric Lunsford. Having learned his lesson from that fight, Hardy is now training regularly with other top fighters including UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis and others at 4OZ Fight Club to go along with his usual fight camp at Bushi Ban. His goal is to use this hard work along with his SCC fight experience to prepare him for a successful career in the pros, a leap he’ll hopefully make sometime in 2014.
As for his opponent, Jason Preston is somewhat of an unknown around the Houston area but he’s certainly no stranger to the world of MMA. The Tyler, TX native has already amassed 10 fights at the amateur level and has title experience of his own, winning a title for Ascend Combat in Louisiana. He’s also trained under Chuck Liddell and crew at the The Pit in San Luis Obispo, California and will be coming to take Hardy’s title and reputation come Saturday night.
Light Heavyweight title: Chad Box vs. Darryl Orr
The co-main event features another intriguing bout with SCC welterweight Chad Box moving (far) up in weight to face CDM Promotions champion Darryl Orr for the SCC light heavyweight title.
Stylistically both Orr and Box are similar types of fighters. They’re both strong guys that like to impose their will and break their opponents or grind them into submission. The only real difference here is age with Box being 24 and Orr 12 years his senior at 38. All that being said Darryl is also the naturally bigger, stronger fighter and is coming off an impressive win against Micah Williams at CDM so he won’t be looking to roll over for this one. Expect these two to meet in the center of the cage and hammer away at it until one of them throws in the towel.
Lightweight title: Dominic Wiltz vs. David Kelly
The last, lightest, and certainly not the least of the SCC VI title matches may be the most dynamic of them all with exciting lightweights Dominic Wiltz and David Kelly squaring off for the 155 lbs. title. With 5 wins and 0 losses between them, both these guys have earned their way to this point and show enough promise to merit being looked at as pro prospects one day. Whoever wins here will help themselves impressively in that regard.
it should be interesting to see how these young guys match up come fight night. “Machine Gun” Kelly, the younger of the two is only 18 years old but already possesses a well-rounded skill set and decent striking to go along with some exceptional ground skills. Meanwhile Wiltz holds the experience edge with one more bout that his opponent and also has some decent ground work with 2 of his wins coming by way of submission. He’s got a high motor too and seems like he has the cardio to push the pace for three so we’ll see how that plays into the bout come fight night.
