Fury Fighting Championship successfully debuts with exciting first fight event

545889_10201391411803536_1917980302_nHUMBLE, TX, November 2, 2013 – All things considered it was a successful for Eric Garcia and Jace Pitre as they moved into the realm of promoting professional mixed martial arts fights in the Houston area. Helming an amateur MMA promotion (Cage Combat) for over three years now, the two had planned this move into the pro ranks for some time now and this past Friday night in finally happened with Fury Fighting Championship 1 taking place at the Humble Civic Center.

“It was two months of hard work to get to this point and it went great,” the promoters remarked on their Facebook page. “All the fighters fought their hearts out. Everyone worked their asses off. We have one thing to say THANK YOU! We will be back! ”

Rob Wood beats Alex Morono in closely contested main event; Travis Tooke wins MMA debut and more

The main event of the evening at Fury Fighting Championship 1 (Fury FC 1) between Alex Morono and Rob Wood was everything that was expected from a bout pitting two top MMA prospects against each other.

The obvious crowd favorite, Morono started the fight off well with his striking – looking for the bigger shots while Wood looked to setup the takedown. He would get it in the later portion of the right before the two finished the first stanza on their feet.

Wood would fare better with the second round with yet another takedown and got more comfortable on his feet with the two going back-and-forth. It was more of the same in the third with the two stalemating on the feet and Wood having the slight edge with his timely takedowns. In the end those proved to be the difference to earn him the split decision and bring his record to an undefeated 6-0 while Alex Morono falls to 5-2.

Next up in the co-main event, Team Tooke’s fearless leader Travis Tooke got more work than expected versus a game opponent in Rashid Abdullah. It was expected by most that Travis would gain the first round sub in this one being one of the best black belts in Texas and all but Rashid had other plans. Tooke was the aggressor using his striking to set up his takedown attempts throughout the bout but never quite got into position to set up the sub attempt. Rashid landed some good shots of his own throughout the bout but in the end Tooke was able to pull off the split decision victory and move to 1-0 as a pro MMA fighter.

Next up in what could be considered the fight of the night was former Legacy FC lightweight champion Ray Blodget for the first time in almost a year against what proved to be a game opponent in Charles Cheeks.

The two went back-and-forth and all over the place in this one with the two battling on the feet and on the ground. Despite some great moments striking and working aggresively from the ground Ray fell victim to takedowns too many times throughout the course of bout and that proved to be all the difference. With the unanimous decision win Charles Cheeks now moves to 6-2 while Blodget drops to 7-3.

Other notable winners included Todd Moore moving to 14-6 with his workmanlike first round destruction of perennial MMA journeyman Edwynn “Ox” Jones and Rakim Cleveland scoring his sixth win in a row with his beasting of Armando Herrera Jr. for the first round TKO.

We’ll have our complete TXMMA photo gallery of Fury Fighting Championship 1 up on Monday but for now, check out the complete event results below.
