WSOF 6 results in new welterweight champion; Steve Carl defeats Josh Burkman in main event

October 27, 2013 – World Series of Fighting has crowned their first welterweight champion following last night’s WSOF 6 held at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Florida and broadcast LIVE on the NBC Sports Network.

Steve Carl claimed the belt via fourth round submission over fellow title contender Josh Burkman. The latter put himself into contention following his upset victory over former UFC #1 contender Jon Fitch earlier this year but was unable to parlay that into a championship win at @SOF 6. Burkman started off strong with a huge takedown in this one but Carl refuses to stay down with the two jockying for position for much of the first round. It would go much of the same in the middle rounds of the fight with the two trading submission attempts in the third. Finally in the fourth round Carl secured a triangle choke on Burkman, putting him unconscious little over a minute into the round to win the belt.

WSOF 6 Undercard Results

177In the co-main event feature Marlon Moraes ended his match with Carson Beebe only barely after it started by way of a 32-second technical knockout. Moraes wasn’t having any of Beebe’s one and only takedown attempt, blasting Carson with uppercuts as he sprawled and finishing him off with a left hook to end the fight.

Next up, the aforementioned Jon Fitch earned a much-need close decision victory over Marcelo Alfaya. Marcelo dominated the first frame by sticking to his opponent’s back. Fitch defended his neck well and came back in the second with a quick takedown followed up by some well-timed strikes later on in the round as he found his rhythm. It was more of the same in the third with Fitch ultimately walking away with a majority decision.

Last but not least on the televised card undefeated Coloradoan prospect Justin Gaethje dominated Bostonian Dan Lauzon in what was expected to be a much more competitive bout than it was. While he displayed some grit in trying, Dan had no answer for Justin on the feet and took some brutal leg kicks in rout to the fight-ending sequence of punches that sent him home with the TKO loss.

The WSOF 6 fight card delivered some surprises earlier on in the evening with UFC vets Miguel Torres and Jacob Volkmann losing to unheralded Pablo Alfonso and Luiz Firmino respectively. Miguel got throttled in the first while “Buscape” Firmino got the clean decision over his once-notable opponent.

Also of note was Houston’s Chad “Robo” Robichaux picking up his second win in a row and first in almost a year in a half by way of second round north-south choke submission over Andrew Yates.

Check out complete results from WSOF 6 below.
