Jake Shields outgrapples Demian Maia; Rousimar Palhares denied $50,000 bonus for unsportsmanlike conduct

BARUERI, BRAZIL, October 10, 2013 – The UFC’s latest event on free TV took place last night from the Ginásio José Corrêa in Barueri, Brazil just west of São Paulo. UFC Fight Night 29 features a clash between welterweight contenders and top grapplers Jake Shields and Demian Maia with both fighters angling for a potential title shot down the road.

Contrary to the pre-fight expectations of many it was the American Jake Shields that held serve in the UFC Fight Night 29 main event, outgrappling his highly touted opponent through five rounds of action that could be described as a chess match on the ground. The Cesar Gracie trained Shields beat Maia on transitions and maintained top position for the majority of the fight to edge out the split decision victory and move one step closer to challenging GSP once more unless Johny Hendricks wins the title in their planned contest a little later this year.

1382961_10151921827461276_1422132771_nIn the co-main event of the evening Korean “Stun Gun” Dong Hyun Kim also defied the expectations of many with his stunning second round knockout of highly-touted Brazilian Erick Silva. As expected Kim would try to outgrapple his opponent from the get-go and seemed to be tiring headed into the second but had just enough strength to beat Silva to the punch with a short left look to put him on the ground. One more emphatic shot later and it was all she wrote, giving Kim the win and a ton of bonus money to add to it.

Next up, Thiago Silva beat an aging and exhausted Matt Hamill by decision in their light heavyweight contest while Fabio Maldonado decisioned Joey Beltran in theirs.

Debuting welterweight Rousimar Palhares took all of 31 seconds to heel hook Mike Pierce into submission in their bout. Unfortunately for him, he held onto the submission for too long once again, forcing a commission investigation and having a $50,000 submission of the night bonus withheld from him even though he had the only submission of the night.

The UFC Fight 29 main card was rounded off with an exciting opening bout of the evening between Raphael Assuncao and T.J. Dillashaw that came down to the wire with Assuncao taking the narrow split decision win in his home country.
