New Amateur MMA Promotion Rocks East Austin While Benefiting At-Risk Youth Programs

AUSTIN, TX, July 1, 2013 – The ATX was home to Texas Mixed Martial Arts this past weekend with all the action culminating this past Saturday night at Eastside Austin Elite for Belts of Honorius 1, a new amateur promotion aimed at funding at-risk youth programs while giving up-and-coming athletes from Central Texas and beyond yet another venue to showcase their skills in preparation for the pro ranks.

Hosting the show was the new Eastside Austin Elite facility, a large hybrid facility normally home to exitium crossfit, in-house mixed martial arts and BJJ programs, and a host of other amenities. With the amount of square footage on hand at Eastside Austin Elite, they were able to comfortably host this Austin MMA event as well, with the warehouse-like atmosphere providing a loud and intense backdrop for the 11 fights that would make up Belts of Honorius 1.

It was good to see such a packed house to support the many local fighters from Austin, nearby cities (e.g. New Braunsfels, Killen, etc.), and even as far as Dallas-Fort Worth that came to fight. Austin isn’t ‘traditionally’ known as a ‘fight town’ with shows in the city being somewhat infrequent but with two MMA events on the same weekend and training facilities popping up all over the place it might be safe to say that might be changing with Austin becoming a premier fight destination like their Houston and DFW counterparts.

Speaking of the fights themselves, Belts of Honorius 1 proved to be a well-balanced mix of action offering the variety of styles that mixed martial arts has to offer with a host of submissions and TKO finishes.

The highlights were many:

In the main event of the evening, Garrett Scott aka “The Deaf Grappler” earned his second MMA victory with a convincing first round armbar over Vidal Meza. The Ronny Lis-trained Jiu-Jitsu artist wasted no time going for his bread and butter immediately from the opening bell, looking for the takedown and hunting for the submission from the moment the fight started until he got the tap to stay undefeated at 2-0.

Perhaps the main highlight of the night came halfway through the card when MMA debut fighters Timothy LeComte and Eric Leija engaged in a TXMMA Fight of the Night performance, trading blows practically non-stop for three rounds of action that had the crowd up on their feet and cheering the entire time. Neither fighter would back down in this one, a bout won by Le Comte but certainly one in which neither fighter should walk out of their head hung down low.

The quickest finish of the night came when US army veteran Eddie Wittern fought Gabriel Trejo. As soon as the fight started, Wittern scored the big slam and immediately attacked the keylock, finishing the fight in fourteen secords for the TXMMA Submission of the Night.

Not too far behind him was Levi Mowles who scored a submission victory in his own MMA debut over Albert Martinez. Mowles would test his luck on his fight early but it wouldn’t take more than a few exchanges before he decided to score the takedown before quickly moving to take the fight and set up the fight-ending choke.

Also scoring submission wins were Adam Dobie, Branden Little, Corbyn Rains, and Maylene Estudillo while female fighters Brittany Robertson and Karen Kovach also scored impressive finishes in their own bouts, both winning by TKO.
