WESLACO, TX, February 19, 2013 – We recently caught up with Rio Grande Valley-based STFC welterweight champion Joseph Daily in advance of this Friday’s fight versus fellow champ Frank Trevino at STFC 24: Bad Blood.
Billed as the main event of the evening on South Texas Fighting Championships’ five year anniversary show, this one should be a good one as the 24 year old Daily looks to get back to winning versus the 31 year old Trevino who is dropping down to lightweight to chase his second title in the organization and amass his tenth win in a row.
Should be a great fight between two worthy champions. Read on and see what Joseph Daily has to say about the impending clash.
STFC 24 Interview – Joseph Daily (Cinco MMA)
Thanks for taking the time to speak to TXMMA. How do you feel about your fight this Friday against Frank Trevino?
I feel great fighting him. He’s good standing and on the ground. I’m excited, especially because he’s undefeated. This is a good opportunity for me. As a fighter I love to strike and go for submissions. GNP is awesome too but nothing’s better than finishing fighters.I feel I’m better in everything (than him). I’m sure he feels the same way so we got to settle this in the cage.
What’s your mindset like leading into the fight?
I’m just focused on winning and pushing the pace. I believe in my stand up skills and my ground skills. I’m younger and bigger. Hopefully that will work to my advantage. I’m confident it will. This guy is good and to give him his first loss would mean a lot to me.
How’s this training camp been?
Training has been great. I train at Cinco MMA with friends and training partners like Danny Rodriguez, Eli Rodriguez, and Armando Ramirez. I got a strength conditioning coach in Carlos that’s got me fit and ready. I feel awesome.
What’s the most difficult aspect of preparation leading up to the fight?
Well the hardest thing in my opinion is the pressure. I hate thinking about the fight because I get the sick feeling in my stomach. The nerves get to me. I hate it. But once the door closes to the cage it all goes away. I just hate waiting on the day of the fight. Time seems slow with the nerves. It’s torture. That’s why in the fight business people don’t realize how mentally strong you have to be. It can drive you crazy.
Tell the fans something they may not know about you.
Well I’m an instructor at my fight school but other than that I’m a big-time Christian. I’m not a mean guy whatsoever outside of fighting. It brings me joy being a Christian and being a blessing to other people.
Why do you enjoy fighting?
It makes me feel fulfilled. Like I’m doing exactly what god put me on this earth to do. Nothing is better than fulfilling your destiny.
Do you have any predictions for your main event this Friday?
I think it’s gonna be an all-around fight -both standing and ground. It’s gonna come down to whose in shape, in my opinion. I think about what he’s good at and what I’m good at. I’m prepared to go the distance if it happens but I would love to finish.
Any last words for Frank?
