The first tournament of our 2013 Texas BJJ competition season took place on Saturday January 19th with Fight to Win and World Grappling Circuit’s Tournament of Champions 11 held in Spring, TX. As usual, we were there to capture all the action with many notable performances highlighting the day.

Taking the first team title of the year was Alvis Solis’ Solis Martial Arts (SMAA) association who edged out Team Tooke (2nd place) and Gracie Barra (3rd place) respectively for first place in the team standings with 102 total points. Their team was paced by solid performances from the Ordinario brothers (Justin and Dustin), Dennis Sisson, Cody Schneider, Garrett Bowling, and many others on the day.

Meanwhile elsewhere on the individual front there were a few standout performances of note.

In the Men’s No-GI Absolute division, Renan Chavez of Zion MMA was able to take home the $500 cash prize offered by event sponsor Torque Sports and Performance with a balanced performance over fellow competitors like Jason Soliz (TX3C), Raul Jimenez (Alliance), and Seth Daniels (F2W).

Meanwhile in the men’s brown/black belt division, world-class competitor Marcus Antelante of Soul Fighters made his Texas debut with a 1st place finish over Jimenez and Roy Davis of SMAA. Now residing in San Antonio, the Brazilian would make quick work of his division and finish with a smooth armbar over Raul to take home his first Texas medal of the year.

Two more Soul Fighters closed out their bracket in the purple belt division with Matthew Fox and Cody Hoffstatter closing out 145-154 while Rilion Gracie Academy duo Pedro Migliano and Kris Calimbas did likewise at 185-204. Gracie Barra’s Jordan Burton plus Jacob Alphin and Ralph Sebexen (both SMAA) would round out winners in the GI at purple belt.
