SAN ANTONIO, TX, January 22, 2013 – “I got into MMA pretty much because I’ve always like to fight,” Ray Rodriguez of New Braunsfels told us matter of factly about what brought him into the world of Mixed Martial Arts.
Ever since he was a young boy he would watch boxing on television with curious intent until he one day found himself in the gym. Gradually and naturally he progressed into training his all-around game and now trains at Warrior’s Edge in New Braunsfels alongside Billy Boo, Kyle Cress, and several others on the team.
Currently the 25 year old featherweight is now 3-1 as a pro with three first round victories to his record. He balances it while working full-time 70 hours a week and trying to balance time with his family at home.
“It’s hard (managing all his responsibilities) but fighting is something I love to do so I make as much time for both family and training as possible. I work, spend as much time with my family as I can, then go and train.”
“I always try and put on an exciting fight. I’d rather stand and bang but I have been working my wrestling a lot. I feel I’m a well-rounded fighter and don’t mind going to the ground either. I just want to be ready for anything,” he says.
Looking to peak at just the right time when it comes to training, Ray will be taking on his toughest challenge yet as a pro on Friday, February 1st when he takes on a fighter by the same name in the Ray Rodriguez vs. Ray Rodriguez matchup we’ve so aptly dubbed “The Rodriguez Bowl.” Taking place at Legacy Fighting Championship 17 at San Antonio’s Cowboys Dance Hall, this matchup will also be broadcast much farther than Central Texas as part of the nationally-televised AXS TV main card.
“It’s funny we both have the same name,” he says about the fight. “I feel good about the match up. He is a good fighter and i know the crowd will love this fight. We both come to finish fights so it could end suddenly. All my pro wins have been finishes… I think this fight will be mostly a stand up war, but I see myself winning either way. It doesn’t matter how to me I’ll take a submission, decision or KO. He just needs to be ready for war.”
