DALLAS, TX, January 8, 2013 – “I’ve been waiting for this moment ever since I discovered MMA,” says Delis Borges about his upcoming pro debut against Jacob Capelli at XKO 17.

Also known by his nickname of ‘Cuba,’ the prideful 1st generation American was born in Atlanta, GA but moved to Dallas when he was five years old. “I have a lot of street practice (fighting) being raised in the hood I was in. Then a few years ago I discovered MMA and immediately fell in love with it. I realized that a smaller person with technique can knock you out, choke you, or summit you and I just imagined what I could do to someone bigger. It was like a whole new world opened up and I knew exactly this was what I wanted to devote myself to.”

Since then he’s been training extensively at places like George Prevalsky’s Boxing and Muay Thai Gym and Jose Reyes BJJ, both located out in Irving.

“I like every style and I use a little bit of everything but the main thing is wherever the fight goes I try to end it.”

He’ll be making his pro debut building off a 2-1 record on the amateur circuit. All three of his fights ended by submission with his lone defeat coming to Houstonian Julian Vega at Legacy Amateur Series 7 – a fight he took on short notice and for a title no less.

8001949022_c99057160f_bAccording to Delis, that was the biggest lesson he learned as an amateur – to not take things too quickly and not take fights on short notice. “I have learned to be more patient, ready and focused. Now I pretty much try to work on everything so I wouldn’t leave anything out or leave any holes in my game.”

Looking ahead to his fight with Jacob Capelli, Cuba says his goal now is simple. As he says it, “I’m looking for a highlight.”

“No disrespect to him (Capelli) but I haven’t even looked him up. It doesn’t matter to me because I’ve been working so hard and I’m ready to do me! Keep your hands down and your chin high!”

Provided all goes well, Borges is looking to fight again quickly, hopefully in March as he begins what he hopes to be a long and fruitful career.
