BEAUMONT, TX, August 27, 2012 – So many personalities make up the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). Specifically with its stars, the fighters, it’s easy to get caught up and identify them for who they are in the cage.
For example, in the case of Beaumont-based Cody Williams everybody has come to know him by his “Wolverine” persona – a lightning-fast athlete from ATT with loads of potential and a surefire deliverer of exciting fights.
That part is very true. But there’s a lot more to him as well.
Not very many people know he once earned himself a silver medal as a gymnast for the whole state of Texas after only being involved in the sport for a year. That’s part of what makes him the explosive athlete that he is now.
He’s also trying to do more outside the sport in building up his own business while simultaneously trying to expand his horizons by taking on other roles in MMA outside that of fighter as well, like commenting on local MMA shows and working with The Cagesiders on their TV show.
Personally, there’s a lot more than meets the eye also.
A 28 single father to 4 year old Colton Lyle Williams, Cody prides himself on having strong family values as well. He credits the support of those in his inner circle for his past and future success. He says he wouldn’t be going anywhere without their belief in his talent.
Seeing his success early on in his career, there have been many urging him to expand his horizons and move to bigger cities in order to get more pro-oriented training.
Though he does make the pilgrimage to American Top Team (ATT) at their home base in Coconut Creek, Florida from time to time, he wouldn’t rather elsewhere than where he is right now.
“I was born and raised in Southeast Texas (SETX) and I love it here,” Cody says about home. “It’s not too big, not too small, and it’s 45 minutes from the casino, Houston, or the beach. Most of people, the people I love are here. MMA is my passion but these people are my life. They fuel me for everything.”
Looking at his career to date, Williams has experienced a modicum of success. He’s also looking to do even more
“I’ve fought all tough opponents on my way to compiling a 4-2 professional record 10-3 overall. I’ve never been outclassed inside the cage or been in a fight that I wasn’t winning. It’s a tough sport but you have to respect it – my two losses happened so fast I was most of all disappointed in myself for making the mistakes.”
You live and you learn.
Cody has been continuously trying to improve himself through hard work and cross-training with other local schools in Beaumont who’ve finally come together with the goal is strengthening the entire SETX MMA scene. He’s supposed to head to Florida and ATT HQ for some training as well if a tropical storm doesn’t get in his way.
Either way, he’s feeling great coming off a victory in his last fight, a 22-second knockout win over BJJ brown belt for the IXFA bantamweight title this past July. He’s hungry for more.
He’ll get that opportunity to prove himself once again at Legacy Fighting Championship 14 when he takes on 20 year old Gold Team fighter Alan “Puro Osso” Nascimento, an undefeated prospect at 6-0 who recently scored a Legacy win over Terry Acker this past July.
“I feel great about this matchup for various reasons,” says Cody, refusing to talk trash or say exactly why he knows he’s going to beat the Brazilian. “It’s going to be another exciting fight for the fans – I have really developed my overall skill as a fighter since making the transition to a full time fighter and am happy I get to showcase it on national television.”
