WACO, TX, July 30, 2012 – The Gracie Grappling Cup went on the road this past Saturday for their first ever appearance at the Waco Convention Center in Waco, TX.
Relson Gracie and son Rhalan Gracie were both on hand and on the mats from the very first match of the day to help oversee the tournament and referee a good portion of the day’s matches.
“We always enjoy coming down to Texas,” Rhalan told us in between youth matches. “It’s a really cool pleasure to watch these kids grow up with Gracie jiu-jitsu as a big part of their development. They’re only getting better and better and you can tell they love to compete.”
Aside from the kids, the adults were in on a good bit of exciting action on the mats as well.
We’re still awaiting a detailed account of individual results from tournament organizers but some of the competitors we saw that performed admirably on the day were Roman Hernandez (winner of purple belt and advanced No-GI gold in both his weight class and absolute divisions) along with Michael Basaldu and Justin Rebolloso in the youth divisions, just to name a few of many who performed admirably on the day.
In speaking to tournament organizers Michael Campos and Josh Lauber after the event, the general consensus was that the tournament was a success and that they were truly excited to bring the GGC to McLennan County and the city of Waco for the very first time.
They hope to be back in the area with another tournament by the end of 2012 if not sooner.
We’ll have individual results from this past Saturday’s tourney as we get them here on TXMMA.com but for now, check out the day’s black belt superfight featuring Carlos Diego Ferreira of Team Ferreira in Mission, TX taking on Cassio Burlamaqui of XTC Fitness in Tyler.
