MCALLEN, TX, July 16, 2012 – South Texas experienced its latest dose of professional MMA this past weekend with STFC 21: Rampage happening at the McAllen Convention Center. Seven fights were concluded at night’s end with a middleweight title bout featuring the champion from Edinburg, Frank Trevino, defending his middleweight strap against noted challenger Corey Bellino out of Corpus Christi.
Lots of people predicted this fight would be an all-out war but it was not to be as the South Texas mainstay Trevino defended in his title in spectacular fashion to remain undefeated at a very impressive 9-0 as a pro.
A student over at FCFA/Paragon, Bellino, also a Corpus Christi police officer, would try hard to take Trevino down early in this one but the champion would defend well before unloading his Muay Thai arsenal on the challenger – throwing everything from leg kicks to vicious elbows. In the end, it was a well-timed elbow to the head that dropped Bellino. A few strikes later and the referee called a halt to the action at 4:19 in the very first round.
In the co-main event of the evening, much traveled MMA ironman (8 fights in 2011) Randy Villarreal made the trip down to South Texas to take on Roma native Saul Elizondo.
Already fighting in his third fight of 2012, Randy would try hard to score the win in this one by coming strong early on in the bout, using his boxing to put Saul on his heels in the first. Elizondo would fire back with his kickboxing in the second and third round of a close, close fight. In the end, the split decision victory went in favor of the South Texas native, Saul Elizondo.
Also coming down from the Dallas area to fight in front of his many relatives down South was Octagon MMA’s Eli Tamez. He was able to improve his record and stay undefeated at 4-0 with a unanimous decision win over Tomas Covarrubias in this one.
Likewise, DFW BJJ stalwart Tony Tipton of Genesis Jiu-Jitsu also scored his own victory, albeit by split decision, in his very first appearance in MMA cage.
Mike Mendez, Miguel Vera, and Miguel Cobos would complete the winners circle for the evening at STFC 21.
