CDM’s Elite Amateur Combat 3 crowns two new champions; James Powell and Manny Lozoya win

New CDM welterweight champion James Powell

HOUSTON, TX, June 25, 2012 – CDM Promotions crowned a pair of new champions at their Elite Amateur Combat 3 event held this past weekend at the North West Soccer facility in North Houston. The two title bouts followed 7 other bouts of action that produced some of the more exciting fights in the amateur MMA promotion’s young history.

In the main event of the evening, Angleton, TX native James Powell was able to best previously-unbeaten Michael Alvarez by third-round TKO after some bizarre sequences early on in the bout. Referee Robert Alexander called a stop to the action mid-way through the first at the behest of Alvarez who appeared to have tapped. Instead, it appeared as if he was complaining about an inadvertent blow and the bout was allowed to restart rather than be stopped (as it should have been). The result ended up the same though as Powell was able to use his wrestling acumen to grind his opponent down until the fight ending sequence in the third round.

Meanwhile in the co-main event, Manny Lozoya (now of Silverback MMA) was able snap a two fight losing streak (both title bouts against current teammates) and win his second amateur title with a third-round TKO of Cesar Del Angel. Lozoya had previously won the Legacy amateur 135 lbs. title this past May and was looking for his second belt in this bout which he can now add to his collection. It was an entertaining affair in this one as both fighters contested this bout largely on their feet. In the end, it was Manny’s speed and well-timed aggression that earned him championship in this one.

Elsewhere on the card, several other fighters impressed with their performances.

Paradigm’s Edgar Juarez was able to pick up his third amateur win in a row in 2012 after debuting with a loss at Elite Amateur Combat in 2011. He was impressive this time around as he ended things quickly by armbar in his bout with Sammy SaldanaTrent Parker of 646 MMA also looked good with his own submission victory over Silverback’s Jamal Sader in the first round while Jose Gomez and Luis De Leon (both of CDM Boxing) looked good winning by TKO in their own boats.
