While many fought hard at all levels, the highlight of the day featured two superfights, one at both the brown and black belt.
In the main event of the annual Houston tournament, 2010 BJJ World Champion Pablo Silva representing Gracie Barra Texas fought a hard-fought match against San Antonio’s Gustavo Carpio of Marra Senki BJJ. The two open guard experts would spend much the time on the floor in Carpio’s spider guard as they jockeyed for position. Each would come up with a sweep and an advantage. In the end, it was Silva who was able to do just a little more with an added advantage as he sought to take Gustavo’s back towards the end of the match to give him the victory.
As for the brown belt attraction, Solis Martial Arts representative Spenser Gilliam was able to win his match by impressive armbar submission over Urban Jungle grappler Robert Lopez.
