October 15, 2011 – For all intensive purposes, the welterweight title shot at UFC 137 was supposed to go to the Stockton bad boy Nick Diaz before a missed press conference resulted in him being removed from that main event slot.
Enter “The Natural Born Killer” Carlos Condit.
Diaz’s loss became his opportunity and he’s planning on making the most of it.
“I want this. I’ve been training for this my entire life,” Carlos stated in his pre-fight interview. “Every boxing match, every amateur wrestling match I’ve ever done was in preparation for this upcoming fight.”
With four wins in a row inside the octagon against tough opponents like Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger, Carlos has no doubt earned this shot at the title based on the merit of his recent performances. In order to win UFC gold, he’s going to have to get past one of the most dangerous men in the planet in the promotion’s biggest PPV star, Georges St. Pierre.
“Georges is very hard to game plan against. He’s as dynamic and well-rounded as they come. He’s a very, very tough puzzle to solve.”
Be that as it may, “The Natural Born Killer” may bring a unique enough combination of tools that when combined give him a better shot than most at upsetting the seven-time defending champion. True to his nickname, Carlos is aggressive on the feet and on the ground but most of all he is a finisher. In fact, he recently admitted that he probably won’t be winning a decision against GSP but that’s not what he’s going for – he’s coming in there on October 29th to finish the champion and take the belt for his own.
“I’m hard to fight. No matter what position we’re in, I’m making you uncomfortable. I try to not only break you physically but break you mentally. I’m the best that I’ve ever been. I’m the most focused and the most motivated that I’ve ever been in my entire career. I’m stepping into the cage and coming to take his belt.”
