October 15, 2011 – October 29th’s UFC 137 main event will feature the ever-popular Georges St. Pierre defending his UFC welterweight championship for the seventh time since winning the belt against Matt Hughes in December of 2007. After winning his title at UFC 79, GSP has gone through a murderer’s row of challengers including names like Fitch, Hughes, Penn, and Shields while making things look easy and cementing his name amongst the top three fighters pound-for-pound in the entire world of MMA.

Throughout this streak, what’s defined GSP as a champion and as a martial artist is that he’s just continuing to get better.

Epitomizing the word “mixed” in mixed martial arts, Georges has made a habit of beating his opponents at their own games while absorbing minimal damage. Some may call his style “safe” but in the eyes of many, he’s become as close to untouchable as they come. Now he’ll get a chance to prove his dominance once again and perhaps show his critics he can indeed finish when he takes on a somewhat unexpected opponent on October 29th.

Marking a departure from the original plan, GSP is no longer taking on Nick Diaz in what was to be a battle of champion vs. champion after a missed commitment by Diaz resulted in the UFC brass pulling the bout. Instead, St. Pierre will now defend his belt against another Greg Jackson-trained fighter in “The Natural Born Killer” Carlos Condit. A little bit of a curveball but still a worthy challenger according to GSP.

“In the rankings, I do believe that Carlos Condit was the #1 contender,” he mentioned about the opponent switch. “In the eyes of everyone in the UFC, he’s the one that deserves the shot.”

Adding to that, the champion feels that he’s up for a bit challenge in this fight, but one he’s overcome.

“I do believe that Carlos posts problems for me that I haven’t seen. I’m going to have to deal with a guy that has knockout power. He’s a very technical striker and has a great ground game as well. He’s an unpredictable fighter. I’ve seen a lot of improvement in Carlos’ game but I believe I’m a more improved fighter than he is. I have a game plan to take care of Carlos and I will execute it.

I do believe I can knock him out or submit him. I will remain the welterweight champion.”
