HOUSTON, July 10, 2011 – According to long-time BJJ event promoter Elbert Hebron, over 400 competitors packed Humble High School yesterday for the 2011 Houston Grand Prix Jiu Jitsu Championships.
The event kicked off with an Instructor Superfight between Jeff Messina of Revolution Dojo and Jorge “Macaco” Patino of Gold Team Texas. As you’ll see in the video below, the crowd saw a very tactical battle between the two highlighted by a half guard and an Ippon Seoinage by Macaco, who is also a longtime judo practicioner.
Also performing well at the expert level was Drew Lockwood of Elite MMA and the ZTS Competition Team. Drew took on a very tough black belt Jarrod Clontz of Killeen’s American Fight Company, taking the bout with an armbar in his first competition back since beating another black belt in Huanderson Pavao at the Gracie Grappling Cup a few months ago.
As for the absolute divisions and the championship belt, “The Wrecking Ball” Marcus Hicks stepped off the mat as a referee and stepped back on as a guillotine machine, beating all three of his opponents with the same fight-ending submission to take the money and the gold, closing out the division with teammate Stephen “Pesadelo” Austin.
