Sean Spencer Ready to Bring “Black Magik” to Undisputed MMA!

ADDISON, TX, June 14, 2011 – This Saturday at Undisputed MMA in Amarillo, another highly-touted prospect from the DFW area will make his return to the cage when 23-year-old “Black Magik” Sean Spencer (5-0) makes his return against Kreg Hartle (3-1) from Colorado’s Rough House MMA & Fitness.

Fighting out of Guy Mezger’s Combat Sports Club in Addison, Spencer has been training hard with the UFC/PRIDE/PANCRASE veteran ever since moving to the Dallas area from the east coast in order to maximize his potential in the sport of mixed martial arts.

Ever since making his fighting debut in May of 2009, the Bluefield, VA native has been on a tear, winning his first five bouts while defeating veterans like Chris Spicer, Eric Scallan, and Jacob Ortiz along the way.

We recently spoke to the undefeated middleweight to get some more insight on his fighting background as prelude to his fight this coming Saturday at Undefeated MMA.

Sean, you’re currently undefeated after five fights in MMA. That’s pretty impressive. Was fighting what you always wanted to do growing up?

Thanks. (5-0) is pretty good. I accredit that to the talent that God has given me and being focused and dedicated to the sport and most of all having a great gym and the right people in my corner.

To be honest with you this isn’t what I’ve always wanted. In my early years I wanted to be a professional football player, but at the time I didn’t have what it took to become that. On the other hand, I don’t feel like I truly started growing up until after high school and that’s when I started training for MMA. It was only then when I was instilled with the fire, desire and drive you need toward something. I remember from the second I was introduced to MMA I was hooked and immediately knew that I was supposed to pursue this. From then on my life was on a completely different course.

I started searching for Jiu-Jitsu or boxing gyms in my hometown of Bluefield, Va. The thing that kinda sucks is that my hometown is really small and MMA wasn’t as crazy popular as it is now and there weren’t very many people doing it. So I started training in my friend Wayne’s garage. All he had was a speed bag and a heavy bag but I was there every day. I started getting better and more comfortable with my stand-up and started entering Tough Man competitions and also fighting MMA as an amateur. I had my first professional fight training under Casey Oxendine at Team Oxendine MMA in Johnson City, Tennessee. Then I got a plan together and moved to Dallas, Texas where I met the great Guy Mezger and my fight manager Matt Rossini. I’ve been training even harder every day since.

What’s training like for you now?

I’m at Guy Mezger’s Combat Sports Club in Addison, Texas. My head trainer is the Legendary Guy Mezger, who is a really great coach with a lot of credentials under his belt. I know that there are a lot of good gyms out there but I couldn’t ask for a better place to train. I have good training partners, coaches, and our cardio and conditioning is through the roof. My game has improved so much ever since I started training there.

The nickname, “Black Magik,” what’s the story behind that?

<laughs> The nickname “Black Magik” came mainly from one of my Jiu Jitsu coaches Buddy Clinton. At the time I received my nickname I was still really new to the gym and one day I walked in and Buddy was like “what’s up Black Magik?” By the way, Buddy likes to joke around a lot so I kinda just blew it off but I was like Haha, “Black Magik” is that like my new nickname or something? and Buddy said “Hell yeah it is!” ! I was like hmm…okay. I kinda like that. The name caught on and from then on I was “Black Magik.”

What’s life like outside the cage for you? Do you have any other hobbies?

Life outside the cage for me is just like any typical 23-year-old guy. I have a full-time job which I love, managing a Loan Star Title Loans. When I’m not working or training I love being around friends and family laughing and having a good time. I like to cook, I enjoy movies, music, I love watching the UFC and picking up different things from other fighters, I was introduced to disc golf last year and I love playing it. Pretty much any outdoor activity I like. I’m a very active person and when I’m not dead tired from training I’m usually full of energy and ready to try anything.

What’s your ultimate for your MMA career? If you weren’t doing this, what do you think you’d be doing?

My ultimate goal for my career is to be a world champion. This is a tough sport that requires you to push yourself to the limits if you want to be the best but I believe in myself and I know that I have what it takes to get there. I believe in being the best that you can be at what you do and I haven’t put a lot of thought into it because I’ve been so focused on fighting but despite what I do in the cage I love to make people happy and feel good so if I wasn’t fighting I would probably be a masseuse or a gourmet chef.

What are you doing to prepare for your next fight?

Staying focused on my training is the main thing I’m doing to prepare for this fight. Being consistent in the gym and not just preparing for a specific opponent but preparing to be the most well-rounded fighter I can be. I’m in the best shape of my life and my skills in every area are better than they have ever been before. I’m ready and I will win this fight.

What’s next for you after this bout?

After this fight I’m going to continue to work hard and train hard for whomever they put in front of me next. My ultimate goal is to be a champion and to stay champion, that’s what I plan to do.

Any supporters you want to thank before the fight?

I want to thank everyone that has helped me to get to where I am in my career. I want to thank all of my friends and family who support me; I couldn’t do this without them. A huge thanks my Manager Matt Rossini and Guy Mezger’s Combat Sports Club and all of the amazing coaches and staff at the gym for helping me to prepare for this fight. I want to thank my sponsors Loan Star Title Loans, Dom Fight Gear, Cruz Combat, and Rudog.
