A former schoolmate of former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion King Mo (Mohammad Lawal), Coulter initially decided to try his hand at MMA at the urging of his long-time friend.
“I grew up with Mo. He’s been trying to choke me out since was in eighth and ninth grade. He was actually the first guy to really tell me to get into MMA… Now that I’m doing this, he’s been very helpful. He’s more than willing to fly out, help with my training camp, give me advice, and help me with anything I need.”
With an eye on preparation, Rashad has aligned himself with quality instructors and training partners in his hometown of Dallas. He currently trains out of Octagon MMA with coach Sayif Saud and also supplements his striking with famed Muay Thai coach Saekson Janjira in an effort to develop himself into an even more dangerous striker.
“I’m Muay Thai fighter, I like to stand and bang,” declares Coulter. “I feel very privileged training with such a Muay Thai legend. I also train with people like Charles Byrd, “Babyface” Ryan Benoit, and a lot of others over there. And as far as the team at Octagon, Bruno is one of the best BJJ competitors in the world, pound-for-pound. With him, Sayif, all the fighters at the Octagon, and the knowledge that they bring, I’m surrounded by guys with great backgrounds.”
Feeling well-prepared, Coulter will be representing Dallas by taking on Amarillo’s Manuel Rodriguez at the “Battle in the Panhandle: Amarillo vs. Dallas.”
“Manuel Rodriguez is going to want to come out and take me down to the ground but I’m not worried about that. If he does get me there, I can guarantee he’ll be very surprised. I’m a patient fighter and it only takes one of punch. All that layin’ on the ground and huggin’ and cussin’,,, that’s just not me man. I like to get it done, I like to get it over with, and I like to hear the crowd’s Ooh’s and Ah’s.
I’m never one to predict fights but I can tell you right now, I’m confident and I’ve had a great camp with everyone helping me – from the guys at Octagon to the guys at Saekson’s to my boy Mo. If Manny’s not ready to fight, he’s going to get his head knocked off in the first round. To the fans, come ready for a good show because us fighters from Dallas, we’re not coming to lay down. We’re coming to fight.”
