March 13, 2011 – Today at Sugarland Mixed Martial Arts, a group of Houston area Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners from a cross-section of different teams held the second competition training session in an on-going initiative designed to allow these athletes to train with as many different bodies as they can in a competitive, yet friendly, setting.
The first, held this past Wednesday at Paradigm Training Center, attracted a large number of grapplers of all ranks and academies. This was one no different, as there were at least thirty individuals there 3pm to partake in the friendly rolling session.
Initially the brainchild of Jason Soliz and subsequently backed by Renan Chavez and others, the competition training sessions are open to anyone and everyone, regardless of affiliation, and are tentatively scheduled to take place every Sunday around 1pm (or other times as announced).
“We want these to be open to everyone who wants to train. The whole idea is to leave the flags at home, come in, tap and get tapped, learn, and get better. That’s it,” says Professor Joe Soliz of SLMMA.
“We are going to make each other better. Ultimately that’s what training is all about,” added Jason Soliz.
Feedback from grapplers has been overwhelmingly positive thus far based on comments from both the initial group and today’s attendees.
The next session should take place at Sugarland MMA next Sunday between 1pm and 3pm.
