March 7, 2011 – This past Saturday’s 2011 Austin Open marked the busiest tournament yet for the ever-growing Fight to Win / World Grappling Circuit tournament series. Led by Brett Boyce and Seth Daniels, 630+ competitors packed the house at Anderson High School to compete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and No-Gi grappling competition.
Full results are posted here and it has already been announced that Paragon Texas claimed the title of Team Champion with 105 points over many teams attending from Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Corpus Christie, and all over Texas.
Individually, most noteworthy are the absolute champions as Darren Willingham, of Team Ronny Lis, and Georgette Oden, of Relson Gracie Jiu Jitsu, won the teens and women’s titles respectively. The absolute championship in the men’s gi division went to Carlos Diego Ferrera of Rodrigo Pinheiro BJJ after Jordan Rivas and Louis Rubalcava bowed out. Ferrera also won the crowded brown/black welterweight division to cap off a very successful day in Austin.
With this being the largest WGC/F2W ever, changes are already underway for the organization as they seek to sign a deal with a bigger Austin facility capable of accommodating more mats and competitors. With that in the works, the group now looks forward to their April 23rd Houston event – The Texas State Championships.
