Bone Brawl I (aka Martial Arts Fight Night 4)
By Brock Groom
Referee Rick Blaylock deserves kudos.ÿ After working deep into the previous night at the Talon Challenge 4 in
The second fight of the night, a standing slugfest (slapfest?) between Joaquin Nolasco and Gaylon Music, saw Music shoved through sagging ropes for a hard landing on the floor.ÿ At that point, Blaylock ordered a halt so that the ring ropes could be adequately tightened.ÿ After a five-minute delay, Nolasco scored a second round TKO following a series of hard strikes.
Other fighters came to the ring under-equipped.ÿ Two bouts were delayed so that a fighter could get a mouthpiece, prompting announcer Guy Mezger to joke that the only two things a fighter must always remember to bring to a fight are his mouthpiece and his groin protector.ÿ Yousef Alirezaei apparently didnt hear.ÿ He forgot his cup.
Alirezaei was featured in the last fight of the evening, pitted against Jeremy Burkett.ÿ Alirezaei was a huge crowd favorite, drawing loud chants of “Yousef! Yousef!” at every crucial juncture.ÿ The crowd chanted his name when he first entered the ring.ÿ They chanted his name when he had to leave the ring to go get his cup.ÿ They chanted again upon his return.ÿ Yousef Alirezaei fans are hardcore.
Alirezaei earned a unanimous three round decision after scoring many takedowns on an extremely game Burkett.ÿ The fight was essentially a strikers fight, with neither in danger of submission at any point.ÿ The frenzied striking between the two continued on the ground, with Alirezaei mounting Burkett on several occasions, only to have the fighters work their way back to their feet.ÿ Another factor that kept this fight off the ground was the frequent tie-ups in the ropes.ÿ Conservatively, this happened nine times during the three rounds.ÿ The high number of tie-ups and the re-starts served to eat up much of the time in each three-minute round.ÿ Nevertheless, the bout was packed with action, and the crowd left on a high note.ÿ Each fighter fans felt that his or her man had won.
In addition to the submission fights, two International rules kickboxing matches and two American rules kickboxing matches were fought.ÿ In the American rules bouts, Megan Rogers pounded out a unanimous decision over Taryn Parazo, and national champion Kornelija Numic decisioned Kristy Wilson.ÿ The International rules fights saw Jason Lemond score a third round knockout over Eric Product, and a tough fight between Andrew Goldthwaite and Thomas Masterson.ÿ Buoyed by a second round knockdown with an overhand right, Masterson earned a close decision.
Steve and Tami Armstrong know how to put on a good show, and the crowd of approximately 900 was treated to constant action.ÿ Tentatively, they are set to return to Eddie Deens Ranch in August for their next card.
