Thanks to Carlos Machado and Tracey Graham of Vandry BJJ, we have an article and full results from his 2003 Texas BJJ Open on May 24th.ÿ Relson Gracie was in attendance accompanying Phil Cardella’s team, and Carlos Machado presented 3 new black belts to Orlando Waugh, Kenny McClure, and Rafael Lovato, Sr.ÿ Click on READ MORE to see the article and results.

Highlights of the Dallas Open besides the fights included Carlos Machado promoting three new black belts: Orlando Waugh, Kenny McClure, and Lavato Sr. In their acceptance acknowledgements, all three thanked Carlos, their training partners, and their families for their support. With the June 2002 promotion of William Vandry, Travis Lutter, Klay Pittman, and Tim Burrill and later Tery Corkran, David Sullivan, and Roman Kilgore, Carlos now has a total of ten black belts.

Pat “Hawk” Hardy of the Texas Punishment Crew/Royce Gracie Association presented Carlos with a plaque thanking him for his dedication and leadership to the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the state of Texas. The plaque named Carlos as the father of Texas BJJ. This brought the house to their feet in an admirable and honorable act by one of Texas’ finest instructors – thank you Hawk! You captured why BJJ is called the gentlemen’s martial art. Instructors like Hawk keep students stepping on the mat.

Carlos also welcomed and thanked his cousin, Relson Gracie, for attending and supporting the Dallas Open Competition. Relson in turn, thanked Carlos for the spreading of their mutual love and dedication, BJJ. Relson brought a team of competitors that represented very well at the event.
