Derek Campos moves ahead in season 10 lightweight tournament in Bellator 113 main card action

MULVANE, KANSAS – Derek Campos (Team Mohler) got his opportunity to shine last Friday night in Bellator and made the most of it. He fought as part of the lightweight tournament opening round against late replacement Tim Welch. The tournament opening round also featured Patricky Pitbull, Marcin Held, Dave Rickels, and others. For his part, Campos showed he belonged.

Campos cruised to victory throughout the three round fight. He was able to control the action on his feet, landing several hard right hands late in the first round before putting Welch in trouble with some hard strikes before taking him down in the second. From there he tried to wrap up the fight with a head-and-arm choke but did not finish before the round was over. He did however control the fight again in the third to sweep the decision and win his fifth straight fight to move to 14-3 overall.

With the win Derek is now expected to take to take on fellow Bellator 113 winner Patricky Pitbull in the season 10 tournament semifinals scheduled for Bellator 117 on April 18th. The Brazilian was able to upset hometown favorite Dave Rickels to do his part in moving ahead on the bracket.

Other lightweight tournament opening round winners included Derek Anderson who knocked out Brandon Girtz with a vicious knee in the second round of their bout and Marcin Held who won another bout by first round submission when he leglocked Rodrigo Cavalheiro to move ahead. The two will face off also with the winner there taking on the winner of Pitbull vs. Campos.

Round off the Bellator 113 card on Spike TV was Emanuel Newton as he was able to avenge a split decision loss to Attila Vegh and beat him by the same in their main event bout to unify the Bellator light heavyweight title. Newtown will now go on to defend the belt against the winner of the “King Mo” Muhammad Lawal vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson fight scheduled for this May.

Donnie Bell loses in undercard action at Bellator 113

Also representing Texas and Team Mohler at Bellator 113 was Donnie Bell as he took on Eric Wisely. Donnie started off strong in the bout. He was able to quickly secure top position early in the first with a few takedowns to win the first round. He started the second stanza the same way getting the takedown once again but Wisely was able to defend well from his guard and stay active with strikes from the botom. The ref then stood them up halfway through the round with Eric scoring points with leg kicks to finish off the second. Bell was noticeably slower in the third and final round. A groin kick early in the round didn’t held him at all as Wisely again scored points on his feet. Donnie took his back at one point but couldn’t finish. In the end it was a close fight but one that was edged out by Wisely on the judges’ cards (30-27, 29-28, 28-29).

Bell now moves to 9-3 overall as a pro with his win streak ending at three following this one.
