Andre Galvão and Bia Mesquita win double gold at 2014 Pans; Texas grapplers bring back at least 45 medal finishes

IRVINE, CA – The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) hosted the 2014 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship this past weekend in Southern California. Taking place at the Bren Events Center at UC Irvine, the event is historically thought of as one of the major events in the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The action was hot and heavy at the adult male black belt level – the most watched part of the tournament. ATOS leader Andre Galvão was the revelation this year. He led his team by winning his weight class at ultra-heavy along with the absolute division. He fought up several weight classes this year to make way for teammates Guto Campos and Keenan Cornelius. Those two closed out their division while Galvão defeated Leandro Lo in the absolute final and Alex Trans in the division final to win the day.

Meanwhile on the women’s side Bia Mesquita ruled. She won both the lightweight division and the open class with relative ease considering the absence of Gabi Garcia. Bia submitted Texas-based Fabiana Borges from the mount in their division. She also defeated Andressa Correa 6-1 on advantages to win the open for the strong Gracie Humaita women’s team.

As for the rest of the black belt divisions, close-outs were the issue of the day. Five of the men’s divisional finals resulted in a winner without a fight as teammates made way for one another. João Miyao bowed out to his brother Paulo Miyao at light-feather while Gianni Grippo did the same for Alliance teammate Mario Reis at feather. Lucas Lepri got gold after closing out with Michael Langhi at light while Guto Campos achieved the same in closing out medium-heavy with Keenan Cornelius. Yuri Simões closed out heavy with Lucas Leite in the final non-fight of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Joao Pedro Rodrigues defeated Milton Bastos by one penalty to win at rooster while Leandro Lo beat Otavio Sousa 5-2 on advantages to earn the win at middle. Last but not least was Luiz Panza catching Bernardo Faria by armbar to win at super-heavy to complete the men’s side.

The women’s side featured more competiveness in the finals. Tammy Griego won 2-0 over Andresa Correa to win at heavy. Talita Treta Nogueira defeated Kay Stephenson by 4-0 points to win at medium-heavy. Middleweight Luiza Monteiro won 24-0 over Megan Nevill. Tammi Musumeci defeated Mackenzie Dern by referee decision at feather while Andrea Encarncacion beat Nyjah Easton by 1 advantage in the closing seconds of their match to win at light-feather.
