F2W/WGC’s 5th annual Texas State Championship brings change of pace to Austin on SXSW weekend

AUSTIN, TX – The 5th annual Texas State Championship put on by Fight to Win and World Grappling Circuit took place on March 8th in Austin, TX. The BJJ tournament took place at the Delco Center and happened the same weekend as SXSW, the annual music, film, and interactive conference and festival also held in Austin. Needless to say it was a busy weekend for all but especially for those that put it on the line on the mats.

San Antonio’s Champion’s Factory team surprised many by winning the overall team title. It was the first time in recent memory that a single academy was able to accomplish the feat over established associations like Gracie Barra which came in second place this time. FCFA out of Corpus Christi came in third, tied with Twin Wolves out of Killeen.

Team Results – F2W/WGC Texas State Championship 2014

1st – CHAMPIONS FACTORY – 131

2nd – GRACIE BARRA – 106

3rd – FULL CONTACT FIGHT ACADEMY – 59

3rd – TWIN WOLVES MMA – 59

Other standouts in the adult divisions included Gracie Gym’s Jonathan Hunter and Seth Daniels (Colorado BJJ) along with Jeff Hammond (Relson Gracie Tyler) and a whole host of others.

Standouts in the women’s divisions included Ketra Bartek (Gracie Humaita), Sarah Snow (Genesis) and Terri Reeve of Victoria BJJ. 2012 Miss U.S. Whitney Miller also competed and did well despite a gruesome moment in her first match that saw opponent Brandi Narvaez leave the competition with a dislocated elbow following a takedown.
