BJJ Tournament Recap: 2014 AGF Winter Classic

American Grappling Federation opens the season with busy day in Arlington

ARLINGTON, TX, February 7, 2014 – American Grappling Federation held their 2014 Winter Classic BJJ tournament this past January 25th at the Arlington Courts Volleyball and Sports Facility in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. It was the first tournament of the year for the AGF group and if the turnout at this one was of any indication, it’s shaping up to be their best year of growth yet.

Team Results

The 2014 AGF Winter Classic featured plenty of competition teams from the DFW area but also featured top flight academies from other areas as well. Most notably, Triton Fight Center and Lovato BJJ both sent reps from Oklahoma to compete while teams as far away as Corpus Christi, San Antonio, and Houston also made the drive along with competitors based as far away as Louisiana and Arkansas. We didn’t get an official count but we’d guesstimate 400+ total BJJ competitors at this one easy for a day full of gi and no-gi competition.

In the team standings it’s surprise that BQuick JJ took the overall first place title. They’re not only the host team but Quick’s affiliations have also grown as well and it’s showed with their presence winning on the mats. Following up right behind them was Chris Brennan’s Next Generation team and the North Texas MMA squad led by coaches Tery Corkran and Matt Larey.

• 2nd Place – Next Generation (173)
• 3rd Place – North Texas MMA (127)

2014 Winter Classic – Individual Highlights

As far as individual highlights we’d have to say the purple belt divisions of the day were the most notable brackets to watch. with competitors such as Levi and Garrett Mowles (Mowles Bros), Cody Hoffstatter, Sebastian Black, Matt Fox, Dave Smith and others all looking to make a statement to start off 2014. Likewise Jeff Hammond and Chris Hoddy looked to show the same in the brown belt divisions while Austin Dill and Chad Lutu performed impressively at blue belt. Throw in impressive performances from Tyler Brennan, Cora Sek, and more in the juvenile divisions and this tournament was a whole lot of fun!
