Benson Henderson gets split decision over Josh Thompson; Stipe Miocic leads undercard winners

January 27, 2014 – It was another close decision in the main event of UFC on FOX 10 this past Saturday as lightweights Benson Henderson and Josh Thomson went the distance with Henderson winning by a controversial split decision. The two went the full five rounds with Thompson fighting much of the bout with a broken hand, forcing him to look for takedowns and to control his opponent versus knocking him out. To his credit he was able to take Henderson’s back in three of the five rounds but was unable to capitalize. Meanwhile Benson edged he advantage on his feet to win the points on the judge’s scorecards. At 35 years old Josh Thompson hinted at retirement following the bout while Ben Henderson left UFC on FOX 10 with something to be desired following criticism over his fighting style gaining him more wins by decision than finish.

Meanwhile in the co-main event heavyweight Stipe Miocic was able to outpoint Gabriel Gonzaga on his home turf in Chicago at the United Center. It wasn’t the finish that most predicted but the former NCAA wrestler / Golden Gloves boxer was able to use his athleticism and faster hands to pile up the points over the Brazilian. Miocic should now be due to for yet another step up in contention towards title contention after picking up his 11^th win in 12 tries as a pro.

Elsewhere at UFC on FOX 10 Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone was able to advance his own case for climbing back towards the top end of his division with a scintillating head kick KO of Adriano Martins to take home the KO of the Night bonus at UFC on FOX 10 after just 20 seconds of work.

The FOX main card was rounded off by veteran Jeremy Stephens defeating Darren Elkins by unanimous decision in their featherweight bout while Alex Caceres, Eddie Wineland, and others earned wins of their own earlier in the evening.
