Kelvin Gastelum latest to join UFC 171 card; Set to face Rick Story in Dallas

January 4, 2014 – It was recently announced that The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum has been scheduled for UFC 171 in Dallas. He’ll be competing on the card following his first round rear naked choke victory of Houston’s Brian Melancon at UFC Fight Night 27 this past August when he takes on ranked welterweight Rick Story. The bout joins an already stacked card featuring top fighters from Texas and all over the world. UFC 171 takes place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on March 15, 2014.

The main event of the evening at UFC 171 features a welterweight title fight to crown the first new champion in the division in almost seven years. Previous champion Georges St. Pierre vacated the belt recently and opened the way for the fighter many say should have beat him in Johny Hendricks. The two fought in November at UFC 17 with GSP walking away with a controversial split decision. Hendricks quickly moved to demand a rematch but with St. Pierre’s self-imposed exodus that is no longer in the cards. Instead he will now face resurgent challenger Robbie Lawler. “Ruthless” Robbie also fought at UFC 167, upsetting GSP’s teammate and heir apparent Rory Macdonald in convincing fashion.

Also scheduled for UFC 171 is another top-ranked welterweight in “Natural Born Killer” Carlos Condit who takes on former Strikeforce top contender Tyron Woodley.

The card also features appearances by Texas fighters Sean Spencer and Will Campuzano as they takes on Alex Garcia and Darrell Montague respectively.
