Demetrious Johnson cements hold on UFC flyweight division; Urijah Faber’s resurgence continues

December 15, 2013 – Any doubts as to who the top flyweight MMA fighter in the world was before last Saturday Dec. 14  were summarily erased courtesy of a big-time right hand by champion Demetrious Johnson that put two-time title challenger Joseph Benavidez out in front of his own hometown crowd at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, CA. The win at UFC on FOX 9 makes five in a row for Demetrious Johnson as he’s largely cleared out the upper echelon of the 135 lbs. division.

The co-main event at UFC on FOX 9 saw another hometown favorite in Urijah Faber fare better in front of his hometown fans. Faber was able to finish rising prospect Michael McDonald in the UFC on FOX 9 co-feature by virtue of a second round guillotine choke after going blow-for-blow and faring the better on his feet against his much-hyped opponent.

Elsewhere at UFC on FOX 9, Chad Mendes cemented his hold as the best featherweight not named Jose Aldo with yet another finish, this time over Nik Lentz while Joe Lauzon completed the main card winner’s circle with his own decision win over Mac Danzig.
