EAC 7 – First ever sanctioned mixed martial arts event in Brazoria County

ANGLETON, TX, December 15, 2013 – CDM Promotions added to the ever-growing history of Texas MMA last night by becoming the first promotion to hold a sanctioned MMA event in Brazoria County with Elite Amateur Combat 7 taking place at the Lonestar Ranch in Angleton.

It wasn’t easy for promoter Reynaldo Rueda (Rey) and his team at CDM. He’s had some pretty significant health issues arise that have resulted in 60% of paralysis to his face (temporarily, we hope) that almost caused him to cancel the event. To go along with that, paperwork problems and fighters not making weight took the card from a planned ten bouts to six and yet somehow, it was all became a success.

“We had some though times but there is no quitting in us and last night we managed to turn (EAC 7) into a good show,” said Rueda, who also ran a 5K earlier on event day in support of his son Roman’s fight against Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA).

Elite Amateur Combat 7 featured six bouts with three of them being for CDM’s amateur title belts in the lightweight, featherweight, and light heavyweight divisions.

Quite befitting their status as hometown favorites in Brazoria County and the city of Angleton, Fight Science Fitness Center took home two of three title victories. James Powell (5-4) took home the lightweight belt in the main event over DFW-based opponent Mitchell Dutko (1-1). It was all “Jimbo” from the get-go in this one as he quickly took Dutko down and moved right into mount and pounding out the victory. The win marks his third for EAC, where has gone undefeated since June 2012.

Also winning out of Fight Science was 38 year old Darryl Orr (3-0) who took home the light heavyweight title with a gritty win over Gold Team’s Micah Williams (2-2). Orr had an eight-inch size disadvantage versus the 6’6” Williams and was in trouble early with submissions but defended well until he found himself in top position where he was able to capitalize and eventually overwhelm Williams.

Last but not least among the title winners was Royala Smith (1-2) of Brotherhood MMA. A late replacement taking on Edward Longoria (4-3), Royala wasn’t supposed to pose much of a challenge but he proved to be the more aggressive of the two in the fifth and final round to take home the split decision victory.
